Spin Break: Roulette Battle

The core structure of this game is super fresh and fun to play. Using a spinner for a deck building rogue-like is already novel, but they went far deeper and fleshed out that mechanic to make combat tense, interesting, and surprisingly deep. While the game is difficult, you can solve your way through the levels with strategic planning and good timing. Planning ahead is essential. With all that said, I wish this was just a game I could purchase. The core gameplay is so good, but it’s bogged down by mobile game window dressing and micro-transactions. That’s not even to say you need to spend money if you want to progress, you can do well without spending any money. That however just leaves me a bit confused on why those things are included in the first place. The game is solid enough and unique enough to stand on its own, it’s a bummer they felt they needed to rely on common mobile game tactics. Would’ve spent $20+ on a complete version. Still recommend though, the game is fun

Game seemed fresh and fun in the tutorial. Out in the real game, you are smashed over and over by bosses and enemies who either have rarer cards that trump your attacks, or play a rarer card to uno reverse your roulette combo on top of their damage card, instantly wiping you. The chance card battles where their card is 17% and yours is 83% has you losing more often than not which adds to the fun of losing all the time. After a full bar of energy, I’m still in the first level Lush Forest because there simply isnt a way to be strong enough to beat the rigged odds against you lol. I wouldnt mind the slow grind to farm stats, but you are also nerfed by an energy bar that takes too long to refill a single point, let alone 5 needed to start an adventure. Long story short: you will die, a lot; almost always. You will run out of energy and not have progressed anything more than upgrading your weapon once. The odds on this game are always ever NOT in your favor. The random reward relics sometimes also ruin your chances by making you toss out two cards from that run…? Uhh, are the devs a tiny bit sadistic with all these negative aspects about the game? As it is, it will not have any legs of longevity to remain relevant.

This is a great game, I was looking for something new to play and the App Store recommended me this title and it doesn’t disappoint. You start on a board and the goal is to battle the final boss while fighting smaller enemies and there are other squares that allow you to regain health, strengthen your weapons etc. When fighting, you spin a wheel trying to land on certain spaces to where you can play “cards” you collect to advance in the fight. You can attack the enemy, add shields to reduce damage and recover health mid fight. It has a decent amount of depth, but it could be “deeper”. Granted this game just game out so I’ll give it some slack. I also wish there was more RNG to the game as it follows a relatively predictable pattern. But again, the game is still brand new so I expect more content will be added. I also haven’t encountered any bugs which is nice. Overall, great game and I’m excited for the future.
