I have worn a Fitbit Flex for several years. I decided to try a Jawbone UP because I liked the look and capabilities of the Jawbone. The first UP I purchased was very difficult to set up. Took a couple of days and many hours to get it up and running, only to have it shut down and cease working after two weeks. Searched the Internet for instructions on how to get it up an working, tried everything to no avail. Jawbone customer service was absolutely no help. Very frustrating! Returned it to where I purchased it. Tried a second UP2. Followed Jawbone instructions. Same problems with the second one, couldn't get it to charge. I had to return it as well. I then purchased an UP3 thinking that being a newer model it would be easier to activate. WRONG! Could not get this model to charge as well, and would not sync to UP App. Extremely disappointed with Jawbone UP products. Have returned to wearing my Fitbit Flex. BUYER BEWARE!
My main reason for getting an UP3 was to track my sleep, which it does very well. The smart coach should tell people that your deep sleep + REM sleep should equal your light sleep. Mine majorly doesn't and I scrambled to figure out the proper ratio. At the moment, I'm wanting a better interface. I'd like to be able to track & adjust my trends, goals, progress and logs from my desktop not just the app. You can add food but it doesn't sync with the app. Not cool. Your able to link a food tracking app to UP but the major one they suggest (MyfitnessPal) is loaded with ads and content I don't want to see. I'd also like to see the ability to create meals and save as a 'recipe' to add in the future without inputting each ingredient again. Nothing stops food tracking like a lot of work.
Very good app. Been using for 5 years. Clear, simple interface. Currently have an UP2. Don't use the food tracker, but the sleep & step tracker have become integral to my well being. The band will break. Period. Get over it. They last only 12-18 months before they snap and are no longer wearable. Jawbone used to replace them, but with the mostly failed customer service response, the only solution is to buy a new one. I've made my peace with the fact - after all, I have to buy new running shoes every year, too. Battery life is very good, and charging is quick & simple. Besides the durability issue, my only other functional complaint is that earlier versions (UP24) kept excellent track of my cycling - it seemed to know when I was on my bike and would give me step credit for cranking. Newer movement algorithm thinks I'm resting (just seated) whenever I ride. Of course, I can manually enter a record that I've had time in the saddle, but it doesn't up my base movement numbers. Definitely on my wish list from the app developer.
