Peel The App

This app is not very helpful for one of the things that would have helped the most. When I buy cheese or something with cheese, I always check for the type of rennet and if it doesn’t say microbial I don’t get it. I tested the app out on a pizza and used the lacto-ovo vegetarian preference. It didn’t look for the words rennet that were on the ingredients list. Instead it just listed all the cheese with a question mark saying it could have animal rennet and thatI should just get something certified as vegetarian. I guess I’ll have to keep scanning the ingredients myself the analog way, with my eyes and brain.

What an amazing creation Before You Eat is. As a celiac I spend half my time at the grocery store, gas station and restaurant trying to figure out if I can google ingredients fast enough to concoct a recipe that works for me. Or even if I can eat something! This app will alert me of the hidden ingredients I had not considered. In the US, labels require allergens to be listed at the bottom in bold but they are broad and not always aligned with things like brewers yeast that I have allergies to. This app has been a Godsend!

I saw this on reddit and was excited to try. My daughter has a few food allergies, so anything that saves me time from researching the various types of names for different foods is awesome. I’ve been using the app twice on each item, just to be sure. Sometimes it’ll miss an item, but register the second time.
