I am so thankful to have stumbled across Dota Underlords. I’ve been looking for a game to fill this strange void in my heart, this desire for something more than the mundane mastery of my daily rotation. In a market saturated with P2W/P2P/P2 have some sort of advantage, here comes a game that seemingly evens the playing field. Literally. There is no possible advantage that anyone could have on the other, outside of in-game comp. Everyone chooses from the same pool of heroes, just randomly distributed, and everyone picks from the same underlords. That means that you could destroy someone who has been playing since pre-alpha in your first game. Now don’t get me wrong, that’s highly unlikely - but not because they’re a higher level. Dota Underlords requires an immense amount of strategy, composition building, character understanding, and more. You NEED to understand both your opponent and your own team. Not to mention that all of these choices must be made in a small time window before the next fight starts. Every single round is a nail biter honestly, every single round I’m trying to determine which path to take with my next rotation. It’s so brilliant. Anyway. You’ve got to give the game a chance and take time to understand it. Lose and then wonder why you lost, then play more to figure it out. The City Crawl mode is absolutely free and there’s plenty of bot/pvp quests that help with understanding. I spent $5 on the battle pass because they deserve that at least, and it’s all cosmetics and what not. This game is fair, it’s fun, it works the mind, it doesn’t require spending money, and it’s ad free. Thank you Valve, this is what I needed! 🙌
Dear Developer Team First of all, I would like to thanks the team who work extremely hard to bring us this big update that every player is looking for. But unfortunately, things didn’t go smoothly for this update. While we are all joyful for the update, with lots of thing to test out and learn, many of us has agreed that there are too many critical issues related to the game. These issues range from new item errors, new health bar that’s too big, heroes avatar, UI, mobile optimization, and many more. Personally, I think the old design really help the game express its uniqueness, so for the big update to work, it can just put on top of the old design, but that’s my own opinion about it. I rarely write a game review, but I hope you take this review seriously, work through the game carefully, and fix the issues that affect the players. We don’t want to rush you guys to bring out the big update, but we want that every big update is improving the player’s experience, not making them want to leave the game. I give 4 out of 5 stars as an encouragement for your effort, hope you can fix these issues soon!
I’ve seen a lot of one star reviews saying that it’s impossible to complete alliances or get three star heroes. The game is fairly easy to pick up and play but takes some time to learn its mechanics like gold economy, shared hero pool, leveling without waste, builds, positioning and item min/maxing. I’ve only put about 40 hours into the game so far, but like most competitive games out there it takes time to learn the strategies and make them work, but with time it becomes easy to build up the alliances you need or bring units to three stars. The game has a great UI (much better than most other auto chess games out there) that really does a good job giving you the important info you need to know quickly while you are trying to buy new units between rounds. It’s also got a nice reward structure that makes it good to keep playing and building up new boards, banners, emotes, and win streak flames. My only couple of gripes are that the meta is in flux all the time (which is understandable because it’s in beta) as they are trying to work on the balance. It also runs at a slower pace with lots of down time between rounds, rather than the quicker stride that some auto chess battlers like Teamfight Tactics has.
