A lot of other news outlets seem to be trending toward being platforms designed to drive user engagement as their North Star (games, recipes, auto playing videos on main news screen that you can’t turn off, consumer product reviews that feel like sponsored ads, no control over the sections you see, etc..) while the traditional focus on high quality news and good reading experience goes by the wayside. Very happy to have and support Reuters with a paid subscription.
I subscribed a month ago and was reading some articles, and all seemed OK and then I read an article I can’t recall it was a couple weeks ago, but it had the flavor of the left wing media and that left a bad taste in my mouth. I canceled and then started the subscription back again a couple days ago. Because I’ve been jumping from media group to another media group to another. I’m running out of places to run to. You are one of the last ones and as of lately the articles have been pretty much down the middle just reporting the news and that’s what I like. That’s what I’ve always liked. Why can’t anyone just report the news without a spin or twist or BS? Gave it four stars. We’ll see if it flies straight. So far so good.
They provide great news. Very informative and I love that. But the ad bloat is unreal. On a browser you’ll deal with 1/3 screen banners, auto play videos, and just nonstop side bar flashing ads. It is just awful from a user experience perspective. There’s ways to stop that but you have to be technical. It would instead be very nice if they simply offered a tier to see NO ads. Why this doesn’t get offered I don’t know. I’d gladly pay up to 20$ a month to not be blitzed with ads. I truly hate them. Pi-hole is my friend and I can get most of the ads cut out at the network layer but I mean, in 2025 if my fan is coming on on your website, you failed to test your site. Bottom line. Please either adjust the user experience in the browser or offer a second tier of pay to see NO ads at all. I’d sign right up. Again, I truly despise ads and they detract from the reading, please take my money and stop blitzing me with ads.
