I have been using the app for almost two years. It is excellent for someone like me who uses it 1-2x/week and needs a small amount of motivation, but not instructor yelling level motivation. At my low usage it costs me maybe $1.50 per session. Very worth it for the added tracking and motivation. I never had an issue until the other day when it told me my rower, which is the same as ever, wasn’t supported. I reached out for help and could not believe how quickly they replied and then told me how to fix the issue (and it worked!). So the app is reliable and helpful, and apparently so is the customer service. Looks like I will keep renewing as long as I can physically handle it!
The app is simple and it did help motivate me in my first year of rowing with my C2. That being said the subscription models is too expensive for what the app offers. I’m mostly comparing EXR to Zwift which currently is only for cycling. Zwift has a similar subscription price point but offers a much richer and immersive experience, as well as large community of cyclists and runners. Also cycling and keeping in pace with a pack of riders is simple a more social experience. Rowing is rather solitary and a standalone premium app is all that is needed. I also only see one or two other rowers each session vs hundreds in Zwift. EXR has a nice dynamic metronome, the graphics are cute, the sound relaxing and the Strava integration is key but I doubt I will continue my subscription after my year is up. It simply a good app with a subscription whose value doesn’t line up with the price.
EXR has turned into my go to training app. No, you don’t get the hyper fine tuned data you get from ErgZone, but you do get plenty of feedback for effective training and the environment looks amazing on a large display TV or 32” monitor. I used to use Metrownome for SPM pacing, but now EXR has the icon to set your SPM with the workout. This might not be for super serious competitive rowers but it’s more than enough for the person looking to maintain or improve fitness. I will say there’s a lot of info on an iPhone display but it’s ok and I’d rather have too much than not enough. If you want more data then set your pm5 monitor to see what you need to. Good job, I’ll keep the subscription going.
