Reviews: What People Think About ErgData

Love what Concept2 did with the data! Lots of data great to see heart rate, Watts, Power with great detail, and be able to make workouts from the app - great job! 5/5 data provided
Connecting to the erg -3/5 some PM5s are weird when trying to connect to the app, and there isn't a straightforward way to check if the firmware is updated or not, would be great as connection issues for some rowers happen.
Heart rate - if you are not using a chest strap don’t bother looking at the heart rate. The wrist heart rate is awful - not a concept2 problem it's the watch. 5/5
Team, Individuals, and social platform for the erg community. I love the real-time row with people, gives off the Zwift-style ride with anyone's feel, and that's where concept2 stopped. I can't find my teammates if they didn't join a team or affiliation (this can only really be done on the web as it's a bit tricky on the app at least for my master rowers). Wish there was a way to find your rowing friends! It would be great to be able to do what Stava did and provide “kudo” or likes to people's workouts, making the results feel better than they do on your body if you have some friends boosting you up for your efforts! 2/5
I'd love to see additional data screens like a better power curve screen and possibly use Apple iPhone sensors to use more force analysis when using slides.

I have used the app in its various incarnations since 2018 but in the last three months it has, with no error message, no obvious signs, despite keeping it and the PM5 fully up to date, lost about 20% of my workouts. They complete, it shows that it’s busy as if saving and uploading the data to local and Concept2’s storage, and subsequently there is no entry in the logs or Apple Fitness (to which the app is “synced”). Nothing. The data is thrown out without confirming that it was synced/written to permanent storage.
This is such an amateurish and, frankly, dumb, problem to have in an app in this era. Preserving user data is job #1 for any product that collects user data - often without our full knowledge of how it is collected or used but in this case it’s data I want to save. Why would I use an e.g. shopping list app that deletes any list I make as soon as the phone goes to sleep? There is no excuse.
Now I have to go back to the PM5 (where it *is* saved but from which it *cannot* be recovered to the app or online log) and manually extract the numbers I can and maintain my own spreadsheet. This also renders leaderboards, Apple Fitness metrics, and any statistics the app or website generate meaningless as they are not comprehensively representing my workout progress by irresponsibly losing tens of kilometers/many hours of my effort on a monthly basis.

With the Apple Watch integration to ErgData I have been pretty happy, but after a workout is completed I noticed my Move ring jump suddenly and thought there might be a duplication of calories. In fact, I was almost certain this was happening because I saw the watch collecting move data during the workout, and ErgData only posting calories to Apple Health (in 5 minute intervals) only AFTER the workout is completed.
However, I can confirm that there is no duplication of calories. It appears like there is but Apple prioritizes the calories and only adds in the more accurate total calories that ErgData provides. In fact, if you look at your move Calories before the workout starts, and then after, it closely matches the calories that ErgData calculated. PM5 calculates calories more accurately.
The problem that I have is that while Health knows that the calories shouldn't be double counted, ErgData only adds this calculation after the workout ends. I would prefer that ErgData added the Active Calories to Health during the workout so that you can look at your Move ring while working out and see how far you actually are to your goal.
