The things that make this game special are the crisp black and white inkpen illustrations that stave off eye fatigue while endlessly searching through the details, the clever little riddles that accompany the key and serve as helpful hints to finding the objects, the charming lo-fi sounds programmed to respond to the touch of every detail of the illustration (I love the stupid “beep” of car horns or the silly “help” of the shipwrecked), the inventive little mechanisms that evolve with each new level to make the scenes interactive and slightly more challenging, and the overall humorous tone of this world of village idiots. I love that little jokes like the mushroom and the blueberry carry over multiple levels and that one factory employee requires hanging out by a tire fire to get her nicotine fix. I finished the game over a boring three day weekend and now I am in mourning because I know it’s over and they aren’t making more levels. Perhaps this world doesn’t deserve more levels of this incredible game!
I have two different pain disorders...peripheral neuropathy and failed back surgery syndrome (it’s really a thing...crazy as it sounds!), and I try everything to avoid pain medications. So, distracting myself from the pain with things that stimulate my brain in some way works some nights. For some reason reading or meditating just doesn’t do the trick. But, I’ve been playing Hidden Folks for a year maybe and sadly finished it completely tonight. I always made a point to find everything, it would drive me mad the first few rounds when I left a couple things...so I went back and found them and from then on I never left an area without finding every little thing. Thank you so much for this game, I think I will see if I can figure out how to, restart it maybe ... hopefully by the time I finish it again you’ll have some new areas?? I am sure I’m not the only one who has used this for health benefits. And I know that sounds crazy, but it has helped me so much. I hate pain meds, I hate the way they make me feel...from nauseated to mentally numb. But, with chronic pain, sometimes there isn’t much you can do but meds or get creative. This game and one other has more than cut my meds in half. (Plus, a few card games and mahjong work some.) So just know your efforts in this game are much appreciated. And they aren’t just for fun and games...some people really need this game to get through the night sometimes. 🤍💆🏻♀️ …a year later…still waiting for an update, after another run through! PLEASE 🙏❤️
It may very well be the perfect game! The genius and straight-up craftsmanship in the detail and originality of the art, the wonderfully wandering exploration of every odd yet familiar landscape and each one cleverly layered with quirk and humor, meeting all of the equally strange and lovable creatures that inhabit these worlds, the simple secreted treats and overall wabi sabi that make it brilliantly engaging and enjoyable for those of us who relish such things... which I absolutely do. Above all, it’s undeniably one-of-a-kind and that is increasingly rare in these crazy (yet somehow still dull) days... I can only imagine the volume of blood, sweat and tears that went into the entire Hidden Folks process... I’m sure it was a profound labor of love for everyone involved, as well as an exercise in sheer force of will, but I am personally SO grateful to the creators for blessing us with this gem of a game. Thank you all! I look forward to seeing what other weirdness you folks get into... xox
