First off, I have this installed on my iPhone 8 Plus, on iOS 14.2. I also have this on my PS4, so I have a great understanding with regards to the gameplay, graphics and performance. On that note, the game runs very smoothly on my iPhone! The graphics are amazing! Now, that being said you won’t get certain minor details as you would the console version, but for as small as the screen is you really only notice it on the customization screens. Everything you have from XCOM 2 WOTC is what you get here, meaning all the DLC you get on the consoles you get here! Honestly, this game seems and has always seemed meant for touchscreen! And feral has added some UI elements which just make sense and make certain things easier than the console version! Buy this! If you are a fan of the franchise, you wont regret it. Now, for the complaints, and I hope the devs read this and respond as it would be greatly appreciated, especially seeing as we are valued customers paying a high premium for an app. Scrolling your units abilities in combat can get frustrating at times. You swipe up and an option you didn’t want gets clicked. I also hope that iCloud support will be added since XCOM EW had it and yes I realize it was a different studio which ported that game (and quite poorly I might add). PLEASE ADD ACHIEVEMENTS!!! Finally, multiplayer, though not a deal breaker at all would be amazing but if it never happens than meh. I would however love a way to upload character pools to MY2k and be able to download here, but again, not a gripe just a suggestion. Otherwise this game is almost perfect, but without a doubt worth the price!
I just wanted to do a quick review after the first mission. I also own this on the Switch. Graphics look great and the cut scenes are terrific too. The sounds and voice overs are exactly the way they should be. It’s the complete game with all DLC included. The interface works great and the tutorial teaches you everything you need to know. Even though I have a Controller I started the game using finger gestures and it worked very well. Compared to the Switch the larger screen is nice and playing it on the go will work out great. It totaled a little over 8 gb on my iPad. It plays fantastically and nothing took me out of the experience. Yes I know it was just the first mission, but I’ve played further on the Switch version and this version on the bigger portable screen rocked. I’ll update my review after a few more missions. By the way: Feral Interactive who released this game do absolutely fantastic work. Look at their awesome library of games on the iPad. I own them all and they are all superb. And no they didn’t pay me to say this the games are just that good. Update: I’m two more missions in and it plays great. No problems so far. It’s smooth and plays like X-Com should. Great cut scenes, voice over and graphics. Highly recommended. By the way I’m playing on an iPad 10.5 inch from 2017. Everything you’d want in a portable X-Com on your iPad is here.
When I saw this game coming to iPad I could hardly believe it. I bought a gaming PC specifically to play this game when it originally released in 2016. The fact it now runs on my 2018 iPad Pro 11” makes me very happy and blows my mind. Occasionally makes me giddy. I’ve got about 20 hours logged on it now. I’m confident in saying it runs on my iPad just as well as it does on console and aforementioned gaming PC with the compromise of low res textures, but not as low as I would have expected! Looks much better than the switch version. I also really appreciate the UI design to accommodate the touch screens. I’d love the option to adjust the size of it as it seems a tad big on iPad, but is very well designed. I also appreciate the quality of life improvements the developers incorporated into the UI. Many of which are clearly inspired by mods commonly used on the PC version. Thank you so much for including them here! As far as the port goes, I’m am very impressed and delighted. Thank you so much for making one of my all time favorite games even more accessible to me! For those who have never played the game before, prepare for a wonderful abusive relationship. This game is very difficult, but fair. You will always know why you lost and come back for more. Watching your friends and co-workers die at the hands of evil alien overlords on procedurally generated maps in campaigns that last 20 to 70 hours that never play the same. It’s glorious. And is still my favorite game since 2016. Don’t worry if you haven’t played the first game. This game assumes you failed to repel the invasion almost immediately in its predecessor. Just hop in and play. XCOM story is interesting, but the very best stories are the ones you create in between those beats.
