Reviews: What People Think About Subnautica

I never write reviews, but I felt I had to. I originally played Subnautica over a decade ago and it persisted as one of my favorite games over that time. So when I saw that they ported it to mobile, I was cautiously optimistic, but still had concerns about the optimization for mobile or the game losing the “scuffed” charm that the original had. I’ve played this version on mobile for two hours and so far I’m stunned how good it is. I’m using an iPhone 15 and my phone has hardly gotten mildly warm and I haven’t noticed dropped frames or stuttering of any kind. So far it still has its charm of not being perfectly polished like the original (the fins appear first when cooking garryfish, you abruptly get out of bases without a transition into water, etc.) while also having the heart and fun mechanics that I loved over ten years ago. Maybe the nostalgia is taking over, but of the games ported from console/PC to mobile that I’ve played, this really does seem like one of the best. Through two hours, I can’t recommend it enough, especially if you’ve never played it before

I expected the game to just be a port where the devs slap some buttons on the screen and make it a pain to play like some other games, but with this game I was surprised the longer I played it the more I realized how considerate the devs were to make the game easy to play with touch controls. For example you can pull out your tools pretty fast and if your using a seaglide and your reticle is aiming at something that can be scanned you will have a little icon pop up to pull out your scanner the game will also pause when pulling out your tools very very nifty, also props to removing scanner scan time. Also thank you devs for giving us the option to play the game with max graphics I have a hard time seeing a difference between pc and mobile version and the game runs pretty smooth with occasional stutters but that's because I'm running max graphics I'm sure it will get polished out.

I am an original PC player and love Subnautica and Below Zero. I’ve got about 10 hours in the mobile version on my iPhone 12. The iPhone 12 is on the bottom of the compatibility list, and medium quality is the highest option for me. Pop in is a big issue, literally islands and whole biomes are invisible until you get close. I’m not happy about that, but the rest of the gameplay is excellent and smooth. Personally, I think my phone can handle more than what they’re offering. The phone runs fairly cool on the highest settings that I am allowed to use. The only reason I’m not giving this five stars is because of the terrible pop in issues on the iPhone 12. They’ve done a wonderful job supporting this game to mobile. Controls are excellent, and gameplay smooth. Resource availability is lower and I think the biomes are smaller, but this is still a really enjoyable game and comes very close to the original experience.
