Langmate: Japan Friends & Chat

This is a really great app and all, but the fact that this is a place to learn languages does not change the mindsets of the creeps out there. I’ve met some really cool people and all, but most were total pervs. I just want you to warn you that if you try out this app, please tread with caution. Even if you’re lonely or whatever and just looking for international friends, please don’t give the creeps—under any circumstances—the gratification of sending your picture to them, or whatever personal things they ask. You are under no under obligation to give them the satisfaction. Even if they seem genuine and it seems harmless, you don’t know what they’ll do with your pictures or whatever else they ask for. Even though this app is advertised as a fun way to find friends with similar interests and whatnot, at the end of the day it’s just like any other social media out there. I really can’t stress that enough. Thankfully nothing has happened to me, but I’m putting this out there in hopes that nothing happens to y’all either.

This is such an amazing app. I’m in model UN and the way I approach subjects/topics goes with trying to get in contact with some people from those countries alongside of actual research from the countries. In all reality the app is a 4.5/5, but there’s no 1/2 star, so rounding down to 4 felt wrong, and in the end it is truly worthy of a 5. I’ll explain some of its flaws briefly: They have a feature which lets you earn free coins by watching some ads, but no matter if you’ve never watched a video it’ll tell you that you’ve watched the maximum amount of ads and can’t get free coins. Newest update deleted my messages, but it’s not much of a problem, but I see how it can be for some. The chat feature itself has such a questionable design where to your conversations split into a “friends” and “chats” category that doesn’t matter anyway since they both lead to the same thing. Other than that, the pros are nameless, and buying coins is a MUST! I buy about $10 worth a month, on top of getting the free daily coins! SERIOUSLY SUCH AN AMAZING APP

The app is actually pretty sweet. Basically the language tinder app lol lots of nice people willing to learn and teach or just be friends. The only issue is the “coin” system. Obviously since it’s a free app they have to use some system to make money but it costs coins to do everything from searching new people and checking their profiles or each message you send someone costs coins or if someone sees your profile to uncover their face it cost coins. There are free ways to earn coins by watching 5 ads you get 40 coins total for the day but that’s about it. The coin system is a hassle and makes it hard to chat because you don’t know if the other person has enough to continue chatting or not unless they say so. Other than that pretty useful app it’s always fun meeting new people and exploring cultures.
