Digg

I’ve been in the market for a Reddit replacement since the API debacle. So, I’ve been testing out Digg since I was a user back in the 00s and wanted to see how it will go. So far, the experience is mixed. The community has a lot of positive vibes due to that element of nostalgia involved with Digg. However, the app is very cumbersome to use, the comments are limited to 3 levels and the UI isn’t really designed for lengthy posts. Also, the Digg team restricts the communities that can be created and seems intent on keeping it that way for the time being. It doesn’t seem like users will ever be able to really create any community that they want, as the Digg team has people voting on which community they will roll out next. I feel this limits the degree to which Digg will be community-driven, especially for people coming from Reddit or Lemmy, where there are no real limits on such things. Meanwhile, Lemmy exists and has a decent app Voyager. There is a lot of freedom there and hundreds of instances to join and at least a dozen apps. It is hard to see myself using Digg over something that is unrestricted and actually community-driven.

I used Digg since day 1 back in the old days and had a huge list of submitted articles that were mega-digg’d. Back then it was scary because a site being dug means it went offline for a few hours to days. I’m hoping technology has come up and my favorite sites wont be digg-downed lol I absolutely love the new Digg and I know it’s still in beta, but just a few more additions to its functionality and it’ll be so much better than anything out there, and It’s already light years better then the old Digg, no offense Kevin!

I love that everyone on digg is an actual human. It’s so refreshing being somewhere that isn’t flooded with bots and echo chamber algorithms. App is great, loads fast super snappy, some minor logout glitches but I just close the app and reopen it. Also if i take too long to write something I sometimes lose it so I started writing my longer comments in notes first just in case.
