Often times, journaling is a deeply inward process. However, for serial journal-ers and folks constantly writing for clarity the piece missing as perspective beyond our own. This is what Life Note offers. The ability to discuss thoughts and ideas framed through the writings or varied authors, leaders, poets and philosophers opens the door beyond rumination. Unlike other apps that provide their own pov or a CBT or (insert other) approach; here, you are exposed to ideas or framing you may never have considered given the stable of context it provides. I look forward to journaling here but more than that, I look forward to learning how others would take my situation and manage it differently. Many times, I have read the biographies of people hoping to learn from them; here I can “speak” with someone and get their flavor. It’s allowed me to meet new authors and ideas. That in and of itself, the ability to explore beyond my minds confined thoughts, has been liberating.
And that’s notable for me. I have always wanted to integrate journaling into my routine but struggled because it wasn’t a safe space by myself. I always ended up berating myself - but this is almost like having a safe witness to what I’ve shared who can gently challenge me. It has already deeply resonated with me. I am glad for the option to have web browser support as sometimes I want to type. If we could have some options for smaller text font though, that would be great. Joined the discord. I’m really interested to see this grow.
I really love Life Note, and it is no exaggeration to say that my “interactions” with its AI mentors have been profoundly interesting, helpful, insightful and even comforting. The developer has a beautiful vision and obviously has a big heart. I find that the desktop version of the app however, is very frustrating to use. The Home page, rather than inviting the user immediately into to the option of journaling, is almost entirely dedicated to providing data metrics of topics such as Emotions, Topics and People. Getting to the part of the app where one can actually journal is not obvious or intuitive, and I found that once I made a journal entry, getting back to the location where I could begin a brand new entry is difficult to find. This app offers a lot of options (Prompts, Goals, Mentors and Journal), but there is no explanation anywhere on the website for how to engage with them. One just has to click on things and see what happens. I experience a dissonance when using the desktop app between the beautiful intent behind it and the rather opaque execution of its layout and functionality. Is it worth the price I paid for an annual subscription? Absolutely. But I dearly hope the developer will bring on board a visually gifted web designer with a talent for functionality so that this remarkable app can fulfill its purpose and destiny.
