Upgrading to the Pro version of the West Coast Trail app was one of the best decisions we made for our trip. The extensive detail and the ability to use it offline were absolutely critical to our success on the trail. Having reliable, consolidated information at our fingertips—tides, weather, obstacles, and challenges—helped us plan confidently and stay safe. The added historical context was a wonderful bonus that made the journey even more meaningful. Highly recommend upgrading, and a huge thank you to the creator for building such a thoughtful and invaluable tool!
As a seasoned long-distance backpacker, I generally just care about my GPS location and the next water and campsite when I’m hiking—not so on this hike. On this trail, the descriptions and difficulty level (as well as the split into sections) were absolute gold. They were the main things we took into account when decision-making on a recent 5-day, 4-night thru-hike of the WCT. The ladder listings were so helpful for morale, and we used the tide suggestions constantly. The creator of this app really considered exactly what you need on this exact trail. Could we have easily finished in 5 days without this app? Maybe, but there would have been so many more unknowns and I doubt we could have planned our days so well. We loved reading the section descriptions for our next day at camp each night. And how else would we have understood what a donkey engine is without the option to define it within the app? They thought of absolutely everything! I’m from the US so I did have cell service on nearly every beach, but I never once needed to touch it for navigation and planning. I’m so thankful this was released just in time for our first time on the WCT.
I wish every trail had an app this informative and well put together. Markers are accurate, tides are incorporated based on hiking dates, and it’s easy to plan your entire trip by using this app alone. I love the added features like the menu for the mid-trek crab shack, and details like the number of ladders in a forest section, or tips for good spots to set a tent. Full of helpful features and each improvement makes it better and better. Highly recommend!
