Grim Quest - Old School RPG

This is my favorite game in the APP Store. I had been looking for an old school RPG and this one delivers. What’s more, it’s my favorite type, TTRPG. I like the fact that each initial location on the initial map screen is a campaign which builds to serve to pave the way for an overarching campaign. The developer streamlined the combat sequences so that clunky dice rolls are nonexistent, but the concept of XP, spells, weapons, skills, and armor upgrades are there. The game tracks all this for you and all you have to do is play the role of an involved PC in order to do well at the game. The APP store is riddled with TTRPG and RPG companions. This game is different because “Grim Quest - Old School RPG” does not require you to go out and purchase an expensive TTRPG from the store. All of the necessary components are within the APP itself. To the developer: Please continue to keep “Grim Quest - Old School RPG” updated for IOS. iPhone users have lost access to all the other great TTRPG titles throughout the last decade. Some notable mentions are “Call of Cthulhu Chronicles,” “Necronomicon,” and “Call of Cthulhu- Wasted Land.” Love the old school “dungeon crawl” feel and look of “Grim Quest - Old School RPG.” Monomyth is kicking it old school and keeping it real. Monomyth is LEGIT.

I haven’t had the game on my phone for long but I had to buy it because I need more! In such a short time this game has become one of my favorites, it’s a simple game and even tho it’s got a few things I’m not use to for a simplistic RPG, I hope the developer makes more games like this. I like that you can adjust the game to your liking difficulty wise and that there is an option for music and game effect sounds as well! The only things I wish was different was the class choices and that the spell/skills had more than just 3 slots, especially because it’s a single character, and that items would stack in 5’s or 10’s. That and the event encounters, it’s like a 50/50 chance on either succeeding or failing, I wish there was something stat related, and that I wish stats mattered a bit more rather than having a single item raise the stats for a bit before you swap to something potentially better. I just purchased the game so I’m excited to explore more of what this story has to unfold. If this was your first game, I very much hope to see more from the developer!

Jackpot! It’s like finding a classic RPG I somehow missed 20 years ago. Grim Quest actually has a collection of elements that may be unique in combination, but everything feels familiar and/or natural. Important elements for me: turn based; inventory management; quest management; good writing; paced character development. I don’t miss the graphics; there are some illustrations, which are cool, but having what amounts to the old 2D chessboard grid works great! I’m not usually a fan of food in adventure games, but that’s what the supplies system is here and I’m shocked to actually like it. I do sometimes forget to stock up, and that’s ok; “starvation” isn’t the horribly punitive experience one encounters in many games — it’s annoying, and you’ll kick yourself for letting it happen, but it’s possible to play through (sometimes/often). I thought I’d be annoyed by being forced into managing tower defense teams, but I don’t mind; for me, this is an unnecessary addendum but when battles happen it doesn’t annoy me — it just doesn’t add much for me (so far, with at least 7/8 of the game to go, I can’t say what’s going to come later). I expect to enjoy this game all the way through to the end and then start over with a different character. There’s plenty of spell/skill options that can’t be sampled in a single character. I’m eagerly awaiting the next level where I get a new slot, or can upgrade a spell I have already … and then grumbling because I don’t have enough gold to do it. Which is a good, and temporary, thing. Highly recommended if any of the foregoing sounds interesting to you.
