While the concept of Acorn Early is solid for teaching kids about money management, there’s a significant problem with their payment processing capabilities that parents should know about. When my daughter needed a refund from Etsy (a routine merchant refund), Acorn Early claimed they “cannot process it” because it wasn’t a “reversal of the original charge.” This makes no sense - standard debit cards handle merchant refunds as credit transactions all the time. Acorn’s customer service insisted this was a limitation of their system. Additionally, during one call, they admitted to having system issues that are causing transaction logs to be inaccurate - which raises serious concerns about account monitoring and reconciliation. This means if your child needs any kind of refund - whether from a return, cancellation, or even fraud protection - you may be stuck fighting with both the merchant and Acorn to get the money back. Worse, you can’t even trust that the transaction history you’re seeing is accurate. The Bottom Line: If you’re looking for a debit card for your child, consider options from traditional banks that have full payment processing capabilities. The investment features are nice, but basic banking functions like processing refunds should work seamlessly. Would I recommend? Not until they fix their payment processing limitations.
We haven’t really let our daughter (7) use apps and she is so excited about getting to do money missions on this one! We both get a little notification when she gets her savings account deposit from me on Saturdays, and we set it so that a small amount of that goes to her debit card (with a design she picked, with her name on it and everything!) for spending. We have been using this for a year before the app became Acorns Early and was still GoHenry. She learns in the app on her own and will bring questions or discussion topics to us about money and how the world works. I had no education on this stuff until I was a teen, it makes me feel so proud that I’m raising a kid who has a great foundation and will continue to learn as she grows.
