I’m not a guy that writes many reviews, but couldn’t NOT write one for this app. I’ve been looking for a hiking route app that works well with Apple Health/Fitness tracking and found this one on via recommendation on Reddit. It’s perfect for me. Although I’m sure there are many ways to find trails, I use AllTrails to find hikes and then export the GPX file and import to Tooboo. When I’m ready to start the hike, I start the workout in Tooboo instead of Apple’s Workout app on my Apple Watch. The workout screens/views in Tooboo are all very customizable so I can see the info that I am most interested in while I’m on the trail. Once I’m done with a hike, the workout info automatically feeds to Apple’s Health and Workout apps AND to Strava, which is an extra bonus. Other things I like about this app: - Once paired with the Apple Workout app, Tooboo shows all fitness activities on the activities tab, not just the activities you track through TooBoo. - The Stats tab displays cumulative activities better than any other app I use, both in terms of graphing mileage over time, but also geographically. Truly elegant. I had been considering switching from using an Apple Watch to a Garmin watch for hiking/fitness, but this app single-handedly made me abandon that idea. It is exactly the app I’d make if I were going to make one for my use case - let’s be honest, probably better.
This is my most favorite app for hiking. It has so many free features unlike any other app on the App Store. - You can easily import routes using GPX files and display them on your map. - You can create custom routes and follow it on the map. - You can merge workouts into one (it will merge everything including the route, heart rate data, etc..) and it will be added as a new workout in the fitness app. - You can download the map of an added route and use it offline. - You can navigate a route for a previous workout on the watch app, but sadly, doing it with an exported route requires the premium version.
I think this app is really well designed but has some big flaws that make me not want to use it over other workout apps. First, it makes no sense to display distance in Feet until I reach 1 mile. It’s meaningless to me that I am at 3,600 feet of distance or something like that. Second, the time display needs to show seconds on the map view. Once you get over an hour, it just shows 1:17-1:18-1:19 etc and you can’t see seconds. Third, the Map view jumps all over the place because it uses the device compass. It needs to be way less sensitive and just track forward. I used the map for a 90 minute run and it used 40% battery, which is unacceptable.
