I have watched Mark for about 4 years. I think I started with Amanda. I honestly felt so confused as to why he would take the time to interview these products of society the way he did, but then I found myself constantly intrigued and it made me take a step back and think about my own thoughts and how these people effected me and my perception of them. I in turn, religiously watched every story.. tore every person down to the studs and saw them for who they were because of hearing their story. It made me feel like I was not alone. One truly got me, and it was Savannah. It was like pans labyrinth was opened. I listened to her, I felt as if my brain was exploited but it created a sense of awareness that led to me to seek some sort of answer. For 6 months it was simply just googling stuff, mental health knowledge; how to figure out why my behavior is how it has been the last 29 years. It gave me my push. I finally sought mental help. I am now in the middle of my journey. I still watch every video to this day to see the humility mark shows to these people, to constantly educate myself, to hear peoples stories to know I am not alone, and to stay humble as a human. I am obviously a fan, but a fan in a sense of gratefulness. Without this platform, without this channel, without these stories that I get to listen to daily, I wouldn’t feel as comfortable with my journey on becoming a healthier and happy human being. I always picture my child being interviewed by mark one day, him asking “how was your childhood?” And it just drives me to be the best mother I can be. And in turn, I feel that is why it exists. So whether that is a review or a personal story, I see it as the best advocate to download, or watch SWU however you can. Thank you always Mark. Your humility and purpose is not why you do it, but it is how it’s all possible.
I agree that if only we could eliminate the abuse whether it’s physical or mental at a young age, then we could create people that could grow into solid, less broken, confident, happy (and the list goes on) adults. Perhaps less drug and alcohol dependency. But I think these people that have these dependencies are trying to be numb and block out horrible things that happened in their lives. Right now I can relate somewhat bc my husband died of brain cancer and we were married for 39 wonderful years and we have three grown sons. I’m just numb. I don’t want anything like drugs or alcohol to prevent feeling the sadness and grief. But some would. I go from feeling the pain to sheer numbness. Horrible events in our lives at a young age can ruin what you were intended to be. If that could be prevented we would have less of what you have shown us. Thank you Mark for what you do.
Just quit FOX, CNN, MSNBC, OANN, and the rest of the garbage intended to perpetuate continual, unproductive ire over issues almost completely outside of our control. Instead, look to reputable, earnest content creators like Mark Laita, who do not seek to manipulate our emotions but to reveal the stories of those among us who are most harshly judged or completely marginalized. To be fair, not every vignette reveals a particularly likable person. While most of Mark's subjects possess characteristics that evoke sympathy, empathy and at times, admiration, there are a handful that simply do not seem to possess any redeemable qualities. But even among those very lost, damaged, occasionally obnoxious souls, we at least gain understanding of the circumstances that shaped their realities. In doing so, we're presented with the opportunity to challenge our capacity for kindness, to treat ALL persons with dignity and if possible, lend a graceful hand to those in need--even to those persons we may not like very much. So just get the app, subscribe, strap yourself in and plan to learn more about the human condition than you ever thought possible.
