I was super excited to see the lite version because a few years ago when i was deciding on whether to pick this or proloquo2go, i picked that app. But i was still curious about it. And it's a good app. It's fine, it's different. Love the vocabulary, love the morphology page. Takes a long time to get used to, but that's standard for any aac program. Wish you could stop it from speaking each word, and also if you could remove some of the labels for words. (like: or, the, as, a, an. or words with "self explanatory symbols" like up, down, left, right arrows and some other buttons) The speaking each word really stops it from being 5 stars, but it is a good app. i do like it. It's a good option.
My daughter has been using the App "Speak for yourself" for five months. She had a Dynavox for about 10 years…over time, she used that system less and less. Therapists thought it was because she had nothing to say, but the reality was she outgrew the Dynavox. Within a week of using SFY, Jessie was able to find words to ask for what she wanted and put a sentence together, commenting on a movie we were watching. Within six weeks, she said "I love you, Mom". When she came home with an award from work, her father said "is that for doing good work" and her response was "no, exceptional". She went from an isolated 21 year old, to someone who has a lot to say! This is the most fluid, well thought out system that you can find. It was developed by speech therapists who did their homework, (and I believe it was clinically tested as well) to create something that is out of the box awesome! Specifically what I like is the fact that as the child learns language, you add more. It really does grow with them. We could pre-program sentences, but then Jess would be saying what we think she wants to say. It's so much more interesting for her and for us to see what SHE wants to say. Finally, no one believed that she would be able to use this because her fine motor skills are poor, however, no one can evaluate what someone's desire to communicate is. Speak for Yourself has changed the our world. Awesome!
I am a SLP who has a student who was recommended this app for communication. He quickly adapted to its layout and structure. The babble feature allowed for language expansion opportunities as he was ready for them. It's ease of use was conducive to this therapist, his family and the student. The newer updates include a useful word finder. I would highly recommend for both pediatric and adult populations.
