I purchased this app for each of the players in my D&D group during the beta phase. After spending 1000s of hours creating hundreds of characters for that group and other projects, the update ruined over half of them. Many of the hairstyles are no longer available, and those saved characters with the deleted styles were randomly given new styles. Colors, clothing, hats, ears, etc were also changed. I typically spent hours on each character refreshing the randomized options until the one I wanted appeared. This update ruined over half of them. No point spending time creating characters and โsavingโ them if the developers just callously change them with each update. This app is designed best for those who have little care what the character they want looks like, and just want to churn out a quick approximation of โa random fighterโ or โsome old wizardโ in a few seconds. Do not waste your time and money on this app if you care what your characters look like and want to create and save them ahead of time.
I have searched for other similar programs for the past couple of years and the ones I have found, have all fallen WAY short to this product. I have been using PortraitWorks since its kickstarter and it has done nothing but get better and better. I tons of NPC/PC portraits for my D&D campaigns, other ppls campaigns, and since I bought the Publishing Rights Package, Ive been able to do โside hustleโ for a little bit of extra cash. Overall though, its easy too use. The learning curve is minimal. Yes the core basic program is free. Yes you have the options to buy in-app purchases to expand your options to make even more better portraits and customization, but it is well worth it. You wont be sorry. If you want to use it for just personal use for your campaigns and players, I personally recommend to buy the full package. What is it?? Like 30 dollars or something? Just as much as a game? I have spent hundreds of hours on it always creating new and unique portraits. Having photoshop or related skills is just a plus for even more true customization. PERFECT for virtual table top games.
I have been using PortraitWorks since beta. The app is great for DMโs to make portraits of NPCs on the Fly or have artwork for adventures and storyline as well as importing in for Tokens for VTT or crafting use in games. My players love it as I am sure many do to hash out appearances of their Character creator on the fly. They have an excellent support group on Discord that make assistance with any issues a breeze with developer help. I look forward to the Expansions to come in the future for this app as they are always working on improving it.
