Night Flight Plus

Hands down my favorite streaming app in terms of content. However, there are two main problems with app functionality. First is that there does not seem to be any syncing of your favorites between different devices. I watch it on my Roku, on my iPad, and on my iPhone, and each of the three apps have a different list of favorites and do not sync. The second issue is that it is really hard to scroll through the plethora of categories to find content that you want to watch. For example, simply trying to find the original Night Flight episodes on the Roku app is an endless scrolling exercise. It would be great if you could “favorite“ or “bookmark“ an entire section or TV show instead of just individual episodes so that you could quickly and easily get to the content you want to watch (like the Night Flight original episodes). I also just noticed that all of my favorites and all of my downloaded items on my iPhone and my iPad just got completely wiped clean with the latest update. That’s kind of a bummer but I can forgive it if the other items that I noted above get fixed!

I’ll start by cautioning the reader that this gets one star off because of the app functionality. Night Flight as a video subscription service is an amazing collection of music documentaries and performances, psychotronic film, anime, public access television and the fantastic late night cable series “Night Flight.” While it does not have an exhaustive collection of any one video label, there are numerous offerings under Grindhouse Releasing, Severin Films, Arrow Video, Something Weird Video, and Troma (to name a few).The app, however, is very rudimentary and needs significant attention. The following functions are missing or improperly implemented:+ top list of recently watched, but not completed, videos,+ memory of where on demand videos were last left off,+ Chromecast functionality,+ ability to lock the screen in landscape,(When you lock the screen on the iPhone, Night Flight keeps the video in portrait mode.)+ subtitles / closed captioning,(It gives you a menu option for subtitles in the video, but I have yet to see any subtitles appear. Note that this problem applies to films without English audio like Sinfonia Erotica. Night Flight said they will look into this issue.)+ schedule of current and upcoming shows on the live Night Flight channels.Night Flight has indicated that these functions will be addressed in the near future, but for now, Night Flight is a great selection of video content marred by a less than adequate app.

So, on your “favorites” screen (which everyone uses for bookmarks) it’s nothing but a series of screencaps. No titles, no anything. If you have 100 eps in your list, good luck finding the one you want to watch. ANNOYING. And there’s no way to remove this from the list after you’ve watched them - not from the list, at least. No, you have back out of the list, search the title again (and the search function is terrible) and then find its page. Because when you click a thumbnail from the favorites page you don’t get the info page first, it just starts the show. ANNOYING. Oh, and if they post a link to something on their Instagram - good luck finding it using the AppleTV app! Seems like half the product doesn’t shoe up in there. See: “Manic Cop 2” as an arbitrary example. Search it on the website, there it is! Search it in the app, it’s gone! Guess some you just have to watch on your laptop? ANNOYING. Great content, but such a pain in the a using it! GET IT TOGETHER, Night Flight!
