NUS extra – Discount Companion

This app can do nothing that you can’t do by going onto the NUS Extra website directly. The “virtual card” it shows isn’t accepted in shops and the offers are the same. The worst bit though? It’s had updates for iOS 11 very recently, but it’s STILL not updated for recent iPhone screens and is thus at the iPhone 4S resolution and screen shape. On an iPhone 6S, this is barely acceptable - on an iPhone X the app is horribly disfigured and appears massive. NUS need to seriously rethink this app and get it fixed for phones released since 2012, as well as adding actually useful functionality.

I’m really happy with the app but I’m wondering why there is no digital membership card. With so many places accepting Apple Pay etc there are times when all I have on me is my phone. Many retailers have digital cards, M&S, Costa, Sainsburys to name 3. A digital NUS card would be brilliant.

Tl;dr: just show your card in the shop. Forget the app, doesn't do anything that you didn't already know. Can't use the app to replace the function of your card as it isn't accepted. Long version: I don't normally write reviews, but I am going out of my way to say how absolutely useless this app is. Literally I do not know why this app even exists. I downloaded it in hopes that I could use the app in store for times when I don't have my NUS card (I bought my card yesterday and am still waiting for it to come through in the post) but it isn't accepted or acknowledged in store, as a few of my peers have noted in their reviews as well. Being able to use the app for deals in store would be a big plus, as many other apps are already currently able to do that (i.e. Starbucks, Subway, KFC). The technology is there. Also, why is adding deals such a long winded process? I see a local deal I like on the locations map on the app, I should be able to add it with one or two further steps. In reality in the app, I select the local deal, then get redirected to search for the deal from the list of -all- the deals (when I've already selected the exact deal and company that I wanted from the previous step??), then have to give it a name and description and then wait for it to get approved? What the heck? So redundant and pointless.
