It’s NOT reliable. When it works it’s fine. However, when it doesn’t you’re “in the dark” and WILL require a visit to the generator to fix the problem. Details: In the two months since I’ve had a NEW generator installed, 3 times (about once every two weeks) the APP says that it cannot communicate with the generator and retrieve current status or issue “alerts”. I.e. the generator is reported as “offline”. This is NOT a local network issue with my LAN/internet as 1.) the APP can communicate with Kohler (or whatever the app communicates with), and 2.) the generator can talk with my LAN/internet (verified via IP address). A reboot of my internet service doesn’t fix the issue — i.e. having the generator re-establishing a connection to the internet/Kohler. In both instances, only a reboot of the generator via the “reboot” option immediately fixes the problem. So if you rely on this APP and its infrastructure to monitor your generator, you’ll be dissapointed.
EDIT: after the 3rd “connection loss” in the 2 months since the generator was installed I’ve given up rebooting the generator. Just watching to see when it is restored. Generator is fine — does its exercises, etc. Downgrading by 1 star.

I just had my 20kW generator installed a couple weeks ago and got the internet connection up a couple days ago. I have browsed through all of the app menus and options I can find and am underwhelmed thus far. I expected to find basic information such as how many hours are on my engine. The controller lists the hours it has been operating, but I can’t find engine runtime anywhere. Also, I expected to find a maintenance schedule in the app, but so far nothing. These are basic items for an app for a device like a generator. And the app design isn’t stellar. For example, the delete account button is right below the logout button. An option you rarely use and which has significant consequences should NEVER be right beside a frequently used option. That is software design 101. So far I am not impressed with the Kohler app.

Update: after contending notifications, the app finally started stopped connecting altogether. Nothing. I had to call a generator tech to come out ($100) and he showed me the issue - he said the generator was stuck in some sort of loop and he needed to reset the software on the generator. My guess, it was a firmware update that didn’t fully install. This is on Kohler to at least inform that a firmware update is taking place and troubleshooting tips if it doesn’t work. It should happen within the app - not just take place (unsuccessfully in the background). It’s working fine for now and i suspect if things like this happen in the future a software reset on the generator could fix it. But things on kohler for making work properly
A recent update allegedly added push notifications but doesn’t work at all for me. I have then turned on in the app and in my phone settings for the app… but zero notifications. For some reason my wife gets emails but I don’t even though my email is the main one for the account. So there’s no way to know if the power is out or back on. Completely non-functional without notifications.
