This wasn’t a option for me, we were forced into using it cause of the new company that bought our company. They claimed to see an increase in employee tips. I find this interesting since they charge you $1.06 to tip, instead of free with our previous system… they argue that you can now get your tips daily… was never a concern for me, I prefer not to have access to my tips until my paycheck… Tippy forces you to download another app called Branch to access the money in your tippy account…. The only thing this had going for it was it supposed to show me who was tipping what, all clients names are listed as N/A… which took this from a 2 star to a 1 star review. so my guess is they have to make an account before we see that. Useless app, so many extra steps for no reason but to get peoples info, charges a surcharge to be able to tip. I’m forced to use it, but I wouldn’t accept a job at a company that utilizes this app, but I have a solid clientele here I’m not willing to leave yet.
The app is ok. It’s easy to use, and the reports are clear and understandable. The problem is the company. In order to access the money you earned, you have to open a bank account at their partner bank. You can’t move your money directly into your own existing bank account. This adds yet another vulnerability point for your financial information, and could potentially affect your credit score. Also, they don’t withhold taxes on tipped income. This puts you at risk of being fined for not reporting quarterly income with the IRS. Also, it charges your clients a surcharge to give you a tip. Our front desk team has seen clients decide not to tip at all because of this charge. It’s also a cumbersome process to guide the clients through the Tippy app, when it’s so much easier to simply add the tip to their credit card charge. I have asked my manager if I could opt out of Tippy. Many of my coworkers hate Tippy and would prefer to have it as a voluntary system rather than required. I can’t wait to close out my unnecessary and high-risk account.
I love Tippy! My previous employer made us wait 2 weeks for our tips in payroll. It was easy to download the app, set up a Branch account and get my tips immediately after my client checks out. I wasn’t sure about Branch buttt my tips can be spent right away and they give cash back at certain businesses when I use their debit card…. If it’s free it’s for me! This also may sound crazy but I swear I’m making more in tips, either that or I’m just paying more attention to it. I saw others say that they don’t get their whole tip….I don’t know what they are talking about because I get the whole tip each time and am thankful to know who left me a tip.
