The game works well when playing solo against the robot. (I don’t play multiplayer online so I can’t speak to that.) I believe it saves if you quit the app, though I think it replays the animation of the last turn, which isn’t a dealbreaker. I don’t play with the expansions, so I can’t speak to how those work. In the past the zombie expansion would freeze mid-game. That may have been fixed, but I prefer to play the base game anyway so I haven’t tested it recently. The game plays well on a phone since you can zoom in on cards. After you’re familiar with them all you won’t even have to zoom. I recommend this light strategy game where you can never predict the outcome. It’s chaotic and enjoyable if you accept the chaos.
Fluxx, despite its simple (and ever changing) rules, can be a very complex game with its fluid dynamics and interwoven actions. Creating a port of Fluxx on a portable device is understandably a difficult task. To its credit, Playdek has done an admirable job bringing Fluxx to iOS.There are a few minor UI quirks that Playdek should improve upon though. First, when there's many many cards in your hand, it is nearly impossible to pick out cards on iPhones and iPods. Second, far too much of the play screen (about 50%) is dedicated to the opponents' keeper area. If this was reduced, it would leave more room for the rule area and your own hand and keepers. Third, the draw, play, the limit rules should have fixed positions on the rule area. It is sometimes hard to pick out certain rules from the others. The AI isn't bad, but it isn't all that good. The "easy" AI just plays stupidly and is adequate for an 8 or 9 year old. The "hard" AI is much better, but sometimes does incredibly bone-headed plays at times. Tightening up the AI would be a welcome improvement. While this might seem like a lot of complaints, don't get me wrong. Playdek has done a great job on a very difficult game to put on a portable device. The gameplay is overall suburb, the graphics attractive, the sounds and music pleasant. I'm enjoying the game a lot.NOTE: For Fluxx fans out there, it should be noted that this is a port of the Mass Market version of Fluxx (the one you can buy at Target, not at your hobby store).
This is the kind of game that may not be for everyone. Though I think if you give it a chance you'll love it. I've seen people play this card game for awhile and it looked confusing so never jumped on board. Then over the holidays I picked it up (Zombie Fluxx) to play with some family at a fame store out of town (I was in charge of game night). After a few run through a I got the hang of the game and that's when it really got fun. There is a strategy to the game. Which offer playing on the iPad feels like it varies slightly between the different versions of the Fluxx card games. I do like the Zombie version better so I hope they add all of their others theme versions of this game as well. I do notice that the computer AI does always take keeper cards from me no matter which AI player it is. It would be nice if the AI was more like Catan and they AIs all played different strategies. Great Game though. Give it a chance on the iPad or the card game.
Playdek and Looney Labs team up to bring this amazingly fun card game to mobile devices. Fluxx fuses its chaotic and fun game play with offline and on...
