This is a very difficult system to figure out. If you don’t sign up first on their website then down load the app then good luck nothing works right. Even when you do sign up correctly if you have a problem or questions good luck with that as well. It will take two days for them to get back with you for every question you have. You could be waiting for weeks before you get a answer. They have no direct customer service only email and wait. It’s terrible ! Sometimes you service will go off when your on auto pay for no reason and then try to get it on again. Nope not happening. You must wait for weeks to get it back on. It’s it’s the money that keeps this company from having a real customer service then charge more for God sakes. People will pay extra for great service rather then have to wait for days and weeks to correct an issue. It goes without saying service rules.
The app is good. But modern smart phones are capable of using the internet via a wired ethernet connection. I have 2 smart phones and I can surf the internet faster using my wired ethernet connection but I cannot connect Silent Circle to the wired ethernet connection. By using a wired ethernet connection instead of WiFi the user will prevent an ad hoc anonymous connections, evil twin and honey pot connections. Would it be that difficult for silent circle to modify their app to give us a choice if we want to use silent circle via WiFi or wired ethernet. These nefarious connection are just as dangerous to our privacy as talking on a regular cell phone. Please modify the app to give us the option of using Silent Circle via a wired ethernet connection
Silent Phone has come some distance over the years. On the upside, they’ve brought stability to peer to peer VOIP calls in the app. Downside continues to be very unreliable handling of media attachments (frequent failures when attempting to share photos/videos). It’s been like this for a while so I’m not sure when it’ll get rectified by the developers. Silent World is also improved though occasionally it simply fails to dial out to countries which should be working- this normally resolves itself in a few days but there is no indication of when this disruption may happen so users must simply go with the flow. Not exactly stellar but it’s also a very useful feature of the app when it’s working fine. Support is no longer responsive- the company (which has gone through several avatars of itself) is now focused on the large Enterprise market and thus smaller users must take what they get. Signal (whisper systems) is more reliable but without the facility to call outside the app. Privacy of Silent Phone is questionable- your content may be encrypted but they know who’s talking to whom via the payment information of each client. Prepaid Cards, Ronin codes, bitcoin payment were shut down and they require a working credit card on file for each user- not exactly a panacea for anyone concerned about pattern analysis of their metadata. This is obviously information that the company can be compelled to disclose - zero knowledge system this is NOT. Cannery also pulled. Users are compelled to communicate with the company over unencrypted Email which seems quite ironic for a company focused on securing your communications. Phil Zimmerman, who was the face of trust of this company, has disappeared from its literature and his current status of involvement is not clear. Perhaps it’s time some reporters do some digging into Silent Circle and its latest corporate avatar?!
