Works as intended. Simple setup process in which you scan your DL’s barcode, take a facial confirming selfie, and your information is now stored on your phone. You can limit your personal information e.g home address by using the age verification tab, or full information via TSA tab, or full info using the third tab. Good initial step towards digital identification.

If I could give this zero stars, I would. This has got to be one of the biggest insults to anyone I’ve ever seen. I try to imagine the thought process of whoever released this: “Let’s create an app that no one can use and is so user unfriendly that even the one thing that the user absolutely needs to even use it won’t work: the scanner. I’m not entirely sure why you would not allow a manual entry for this because the scanner is horrible. It’s blurry, and it’s like it was taken on an old flip phone you found in a Tibetan cave. Why is it that government websites, apps, and graphics in general (including the user experience) are among the worst. I understand you’re probably replicating how most people feel anyway dealing with the government/DMV, but this is a bit on the nose, isn’t it? Just add it to Apple wallet already and delete this awful app.

Not only is this mobile ID pretty much useless in Virginia… but if you don’t open it regularly to refresh, when you do open it, you’re presented with a notice that says “you haven’t refreshed in a while” and you’re asked to connect to the internet and try again. First of all, it’s a phone. It’s always connected to the internet. Secondly, when you do hit “try again,” nothing happens. Eventually you get tired of waiting and force close the app. When you relaunch it you discover the ID has self-deleted and you have to go through the entire setup process again. Your tax dollars at work, folks! On a government contract with a company for a useless app that doesn’t even work right.
About Virginia mID
Virginia’s Mobile ID (mID) is a voluntary, secure, and digital version of your Virginia-issued driver’s license or ID card that you carry in an app on your smartphone. Because the mID is a new technology, you should continue to carry your physical ID with you because not all entities are able to verify mID yet. The Virginia DMV urges people to always carry their physical ID when driving so it can be used in interactions with law enforcement during traffic stops or incidents.

The mID provides an official driver’s license or identification card on your mobile device and gives you the ability to control what information you share. Unlike the physical card and barcode, you may limit the data you share with businesses or organizations that you interact with.

The mID was implemented to give you additional convenience and to improve your privacy and control. Privacy protections are built into the software so that no entities can track how you use your mID. No data ever leaves your device without your consent. Additionally, Virginia is not notified where you use the mID. The mID also gives greater accuracy to the businesses with whom you interact a high level of assurance that the identity data is genuine and unaltered, and can lower the incidence of fraudulent purchases, illegal driving, and criminals impersonating citizens.
