I purchased the TABLO gizmo to cut the cord and use an antenna to view local stations. While I’m able to very some stations regularly that’s not the case with others even if they have a strong antenna signal. I have also checked my WiFi signal where my TABLO unit is located and it is very good. Some stations with very strong antenna signals at times visually freeze and only the audio plays. Some times they drop off completely and immediately the unit takes me to the station guide. If I select the same station using the guide it plays instantly for a period of time only to drop off again. Some stations also seem to buffer frequently and then drop off. Seems like others have had issues with TABLO. While it may work for some without issues, its my opinion that these units are finicky and need all the stars aligned in a given manner for it to work without interruption.

I was hesitant to switch from the Recast because of mixed reviews about performance. I am pleased. My performance on a Samsung TV was pretty bad. I also could not get the sound to work. Maybe it has been fixed in the last month. On FireTV, performance has been good. I had a few shows that did not record at first, but it has been good lately. I just bought an AppleTV. It seems to work well so far. On the AppleTV, I had to set the sound to stereo rather than Dolby 5.1 to prevent a 5 second delay every time I skipped forward. So, the platform can make a difference in one’s experience. Edit- I did not give it enough time and reduced my rating. I just found out on Apple TV, you can’t watch the beginning of the show while it is being recorded. I often let the news or a sports game go for a while until watching. I hate the cluttered FireTV device, so I will move the new AppleTV to the back bedroom and try a Roku for my main streamer.

The Tablo platform is pretty awesome. We use it to record a ton of shows and have added external storage to the device so that we can have a huge library. The biggest demerit to this app is something that is a problem on all Apple devices – you cannot watch a show that is recording in progress. Our use case is that we watch the Today show with late start, about an hour into the program. We can’t start watching it until after the show has finished recording on Apple Devices. We replaced our 3 Apple TV streamers with Fire Sticks because they can play recordings in progress. In fact every other platform can. It’s likely a codec issue and not something the app team can fix. Other than that, the app is rock solid and works extremely well. When using our iphones and iPads, it’s easy to navigate and use.
