I’ve been banking with step since I was 15, I loved it for many years even now. My only issue and my biggest issue is now support is slow to answer. My in app chat doesn’t work and they are slow when answering emails. I have been urgently trying to get a hold of them. They limited my account and cant access funds. They want me to verify my account by submitting documents but the email they send me takes me to the in app chat that doesn’t work. I’m highly disappointed especially as a customer that’s been using step for years. I loved banking with step but I feel as if I can no longer stay with them. I’m an adult now with bills and things I need to pay and can’t aces access the funds in my account. Again I’m disappointed and frustrated because it’s been days now since I last heard a response from anyone. One of their best features that I loved was the fast reply’s. Not necessarily fast but I definitely wouldn’t have been waiting days for a response. Especially when it’s this urgent. It my fault for not keeping money in another bank account but it’s ridiculous how I can’t even transfer money out. Or at least make purchases so I can pay bills. I have a kid I have to worry about and it’s hard right now not being able to get my funds. And even more frustrated my direct deposits won’t come through. Step do better and try to fix these issues your a good bank but this is a major issue that’s affecting me financially, and my everyday life.
An issue that I have run into is one you cannot easily see how close you are to the limits set on your card so be ready to break out the calculator, and two while Step claims you can request a limit increase for your card, they will most likely deny you stating that you have reached the maximum allowed. While others have 5x the limits set forth for the “average everyday user”. Step is great for most things but if you think you will hit the initial limit then you need to use another bank. So if you have any unusual purchases such as vehicle repairs, income tax or anything that may be sufficiently large don’t expect to use your card or at least for awhile after the purchase. And if you get a raise and your cost of living increases they leave you high and dry when you are trying to pay bills or in the store and your cards is declining no matter how much money you have. And they don’t adapt well, not sure how they calculate spending limit needs but someone who makes $1000 a month can have a $25,000 limit on their card but someone who makes $10,000 a month can only spend $5000. If you choose to use step always have a backup and a way to quickly move funds.
So I’ve been using step for about a little over a year now and I like it, it’s a pretty cool app/bank. If you’re starting out on credit like I am it’s really good for that. I’m able to borrow up to just under $100 if I need to however, for the longest time (and I mean a good 6 months) I wasn’t able to because my card was declined when I accidentally used that one instead of my other card for tap pay on my phone. So that’s one thing I had a problem about. I’m tryna build credit here and it just got taken away😭😂. Another thing is finding an atm to withdraw money. I think this might just be a me problem but I can’t find an atm to save my life. I think it’s just my area however. And the last minor problem I have is Apple Pay. I send and receive money a lot through Apple Pay and it would be nice to be able to do that without having to keep my other bank account open just for that. I literally have another bank account open just to send and receive money and be able to deposit and take out cash. But other than that I love the fact it tells you what’s impacting your credit and what you need to do to get it up. Overall I give it 4 stars just because the good outweighs the bad. The problems I have aren’t keeping me from doing anything, just making everything have an extra step so I can’t hate it for that.
