Imagine you’re in your seats inside the theater with your drinks and popcorn, looking at the trailers, ready to watch your film. The movie is in English, but you’re with someone who only understands Spanish, and if the movie is in English only, then your guest will unfortunately miss out on the whole film. You then remember that there are apps that translate movies while you watch them at the movie theater. As a last ditch effort, as you wait for your film to start, you open your browser and search for said apps. Lo and behold, as you’re searching, you find TheaterEars dang near instantly, offering you exactly what you’re looking for. You download the app, wait a minute or two to finish downloading, open it, create an account, choose your film, choose your theater location, connect your earphones, wait for the app to prepare the translation, wait for the film to begin, sync the app to the movie, and boom. You listen as the app translates the audio as the movie plays. Straight forward and incredibly easy to set up. The ONLY negative would be that phrases that one would have to read during the movie, are NOT translated, only audible words that are spoken, potentially leaving crucial information one would have to know to fully understand the movie. Amazing app, regardless.

Absolutely phenomenal app! My father and I have always shared a deep love for movies, but going to the theater was a rare treat because of the language barrier. Growing up, he would still take us to see films, even though I knew he wasn’t catching much of the story—he was just happy to see us enjoying it. For years, we stuck to watching movies at home where subtitles made it easier for him. But now, thanks to this app, everything has changed. I can finally take him to opening night screenings, and he’s fully immersed and having the time of his life. Seeing him truly enjoy the experience alongside me is priceless. This app is a game-changer—absolutely worth every penny!

Was very excited to try it out. I went to go watch Sinners in Spanish because I had already seen it in English and was excited to hear all the differences. Unfortunately it was a bad experience. 1) the sound was VERY low and not very good quality. I had to volume my phone up all the way where it would hurt my ears and even then there were times when I couldn’t understand what was being said. But if I volumed it down even just a bit (which I tried multiple times), then I may as well have taken my headphones out and watched the movie in English. 2) I wish they would’ve used the entire track of the movie. When you hit play, it is ONLY the talking/voices. the background music/sounds and songs were not included. For Sinners, there is a LOT of music and when I first watched it, I could focus on both the music and talking, but all of the sound was lot whenever they talked over it. I love the soundtrack and even if it wasn’t translated, it would’ve made the movie so much better if the app included background sounds/music. 3) The movie was out of sync. I tried re-syncing it multiple times and it just wouldn’t add up. The Spanish version spoke after the English version already started, and sometimes it would end before the English one finished or it would cut through the next sentence. 4) I liked that they included the quieter voices/groaning/and things you’d miss if you weren’t actively listening BUT it often sounded like they were pressing play/pause on the track very quickly. There was feedback from the noise a lot as if they didn’t want you to hear what came next. MIGHT give it another try, but I doubt that my next experience will be any better.
