A great game, easy to learn. The one star people that crashed into walls for "25 minutes trying to beat the first level" are sadly either mentally handicapped, or really too stupid learn that pressing the right side of the screen makes you turn clockwise and the left side of the screen makes you go counterclockwise. ALSO, GRAVITY EXISTS! If you don't press a button, the bird will turn towards the ground, turning whichever direction is closest to facing 180* downwards. People saying mastery is impossible probably play minimal challenge games meant for 5-8 year olds, just learn the controls, learn to use the wide open spaces in the levels to prenavigate the thinner corridors. Yeah you'll hit walls every now and then, but keep trying. I can agree that they should implement some kind of reward system such as costumes for your bird and whatnot, but that could be a future addition. Took down a star because apparently when it's not featured it costs 2.99, I wouldn't pay that for this game, maybe .99
As much as I love retro game, I find that most Nitrome games, while they all have Nitrome's signature retro-inspired appearance, usually leave me feeling a little unsatisfied. 8bit Doves goes all the way, boasting monochrome graphics and a chip tune soundtrack, obviously paying tribute to the GameBoy. However, the retro feel is unfortunately the best part of this game, because the gameplay is kind of along the lines of Flappy Bird, in a bad way. This is one of those games with simple two-touch controls (for steering your flying hobo) but they're difficult to learn and make the game really frustrating. The objective is to fly your character around various obstacles while trying to collect doves, though on top of the tricky controls, collecting every dove is much harder than it sounds. I don't mind a challenge, but this game just isn't rewarding. It's not like playing an actual GameBoy or NES game. There is really no incentive to collect doves other than the sake of doing it. This game only has 3 worlds, and the only reason I even bothered to make it to the third was to see if the soundtrack got any better. By the way, the music is unfortunately disappointing. It's barely chiptune, a little too repetitive, and it isn't even composed that well. Bottom line: it's a mediocre retro wannabe that is plagued with "Nitrome Syndrome" as I like to call it (if you've ever played any other Nitrome game, you'll know what I mean). Visually, it's a nice tribute to the GameBoy, but that's probably this games only selling point. If you wanna try this game, stick with Endless Doves, because at least it's free.
Flappy Bird? Why do you keep saying that word? I do not think it means what you think it means. For people who keep saying this game is exactly like flappy bird or even similar to flappy bird, go play flappy bird before you make wildly idiotic assumptions about this game. Also, play this game past the first 5 seconds before you give it a one star review. This game is nothing like flappy bird other than the fact that the main character flies and there are also birds in it. This game has a difficult but accomplishable structure. The controls are intuitive and the level design is fantastic. The graphics look very nice and fit with the style and theme. If you don't get it, then you ain't from there. Most people base there bad reviews that this "free" game is too hard for them or is exactly like another above said game. Well, they're half right. The game does have a high level of difficulty which quickly scales up. But failure never feels like it comes at poor game design, but rather user error. It is a fair game. I enjoyed the 20 minutes I spent playing it before I realized I had other things to do today. So I say try it. Why not? It's free.
