I have used Newton mail for years now. At the time my most recent subscription was to be renewed, I did not want to renew it as I am trying to save money. This app says it has a link to manage your account when you click on it, it goes to a page that no longer exist. I’ve spent hours trying to find a link to permanently cancel my account because every day I am getting emails saying that Newton is attempting to charge me to renew my subscription. I have sent at least 10 emails in the recent weeks, telling them to stop charging me that I no longer wanted to renew my subscription and to provide me someway to delete my account information to remove my credit card information, everything I could do, and asked for this to stop in for me not to continue using Newton for now until I can get finances in order because this is a very expensive app. I have been charged today, and it looks like they are attempting to charge me again in a few days and i have no way to stop them because they are ignoring my emails and not providing any way for me to manage my account. My next option is going to be personally legal action if they do not acted on immediately.
I have been using this app for 3 years - and watched it stagnate and the evolve. It was rescued twice from oblivion. It has undergone some changes in the past 6 months, but there are some things that are still very messy. First the good, the flow on the app is very good. It is extremely easy to delete and process mail. I love the interface. There is nothing that comes quite close. Now the bad: Search is one. The search inside of the program is terrible. It often does not work. I wish they would fix this. Second, is when you use the all mail function it takes forever for the result to populate. Newton’s solution? Send you a message that says something like, “Hmm this is taking longer than usual.” Another one you get is “this is embarrassing.” Cute, but why don’t you fix it? I say this all noting that this is a very smooth, cleverly designed app. The problem is that it has not improved much in the past 2 years. These same problems were here a couple years ago. Yes, I know they updated the app. Yes, the improved the Mac desktop version which was rather terrible. Now, now it is much better. The customer service / support? Well, it is terrible. I was having trouble adding an account and it took more two weeks for Newton hq as they call it to acknowledge the problem. Then, I got back a message not offering help, but asking if i had resolved the problem. I expect this from Google or another free app maker, but I am paying for this service. Really, the service is quite pathetic. If you pay for an app ($49) you should be able to get technical support. I have stopped using the app on a regular basis and am now using Spark, which does quite well and is worth considering.
Newton is the best by far on iOS. Two things make it just less than perfect. 1) The search is terrible. When I search by sender, it never pulls up all the messages from that sender. And it doesn't even pull up the most recent messages. It seems to pull in a random collection of emails from that sender, spanning the past few months, but it almost always misses the message I'm looking for. I end up logging into Apple Mail when I need to search for a specific message. I can't figure why Newton wouldn't just pull up a list of all matching messages, starting with the most recent. Seems simple enough. 2) I really wish they gave you the option of split panel view on desktop. The desktop UI is basically the exact same as the iOS app. I understand the desire for simplicity, but with more real estate on the desktop, a split panel view would speed up my workflow a ton. Some email clients give you the option, at least. Other than those two complaints, Newton is by far superior to every other email app available. No contest. In a league of its own.
