NERD Synth A2x + AUv3

I have to admit I’ve been hesitant on audiokits offerings. I generally make music on a desktop and do a lot of my own sound design. I initially wrote off these plugins as pure romplers with not much to offer compared to some of the other more expensive apps from Moog or other big names. Here’s the part where I eat my words. I tried king of FM the other day since it’s free, and while it doesn’t do FM synthesis on my iPad, the DX style sounds and included effects sound stellar. I was pleasantly surprised to see you have a lot of control over shaping the sound. Each patch is comprised of two sound with independent envelopes, and a cross fade between the two, and then the signal goes through some truely wonderful sounding effects. Here’s the part where I finally talk about Nerd Synth. I was so happy with this free offering I decided to try out a few more. Let me just say that this is easily my personal favorite. Nerd synth isn’t a Rompler as much as it is a proper Virtual Analog subtractive synth with rompler tendancies. Just buy this, as well as their other synths, you won’t regret it. If you’re still on the fence, go pick up the free “King of FM”, and I’ll wait right here for you to come back and pick this one up.

I just got the app so I haven’t really had time to dig into it deep but considering the history of this developer and the other apps they sell, I fully expect this to be as thoroughly usable as those others. I have to say though, that just going through the presets, I’ve already found inspiration for a couple of songs. If the presets do that for you, then you know you have a winning synth on your hands. Looking at the available controls, you have to know that your own custom sounds are close by and they are going to be so fun to play.

I’m a long time nord fan and I’m so stoked to see someone bringing that experience to the iPad like this. Most of it is here, and it sounds great. Very easy to use, like a nord. However, there’s one huge thing missing for me: morphs! I was hoping I could use this live like I do a real nord. They’re so fast to program with the morph function and I can make really interactive patches very easily. Honestly that + a 12db filter mode is all this synth needs for me to be “the one”. Keep up the great work!
