I’ve been doing this iPad music thing as a hobby since 2013. I’ve tried out nearly every synth app ever published on this platform. I cherish the very old synth apps that are no longer on the App Store, and grow increasingly nervous that it is only upon those old, iPad 2’s, and 3’s that those things even exist. The point is that I’ve played them all (almost), and this King Of VCR has me very much enjoying the freaky sounds and amazing playability of the touch screen. It’s really been a very long time to have a new synth inspire so much great vibes as this one does.
I love all of AudioKits apps! I went to see what was new in the “App Store” and seen that they once again had a new synth for us song writers, producers, self publishers, and yes noodler’s … (I believe that term was coined in the “Modular” realm in the days of huge ‘Patch Bays’ and HUNDREDS of 2’ patch cables… and they would stand in front of these MASSIVE racks of synth gear… and they would run patch cables to this or that module, and “NOODLE” Hey wait! Could AudioKit perhaps pull off a modular synth, maybe make the modules ‘quasi-normal’ and stationary, with maybe “lines” or “very thin” indicators as patch cables… and draw on the idea of some of the other software based modular have done???? This may make for a VERY cool release from Audio kit… because everyone knows the old saying “If you build it, they will MAKE music out of it” I know, I know… it’s supposed to be ‘if you build it they will come. ‘ But mine sounded better, and actually TRUE!!! lol! Thank you AudioKit … probably like MOST all of us… I have almost every app you have developed.., well actually all but 1 app that AudioKit released and that app is the House: Mark 1 Thank you! pulled off another amazing app!
I definitely enjoy the app! I think it’s a worthy spiritual successor to VHS Synth! Only problem I’m having with the GarageBand/AUv3 version is the fact that when I load 5+ instances of this synth in GarageBand for iOS, it crashes. While I probably will be using it for a good amount of tracks in addition to King of Digital (Never really crashes much) and Nerd Synth (Which has a similar problem to King of VHS, only in that if I load more than 4 AUv3 instances in GarageBand, it crashes), I’ll likely save using it for the heavy lifting in the synth and bass department in some tracks if this can be fixed. Even then, I’m still giving it a 5/5. Looking forward to more updates and presets when they come! And if this one gripe can be sorted out, making it easier to add more than 5 instances of this app, I’ll address it in a future edit. That all said, great job! Edit: Restarted my phone, and the problem that I mentioned seems to be less prominent. So, it may have just been a case of needing to literally turn it off and on again. Still a solid app and looking forward to the new presets and all the other future apps to come, though!
