First off, let me say that I adore Escape Collective. I am a founding member and consume their content across multiple mediums. But this is not a great fantasy app. It’s buggy in many ways, the rules are hard to understand, and particularly the structure of the teams game is super confusing. Specifically- I consistently struggled to find the league I was in, and once the Giro ended I couldn’t easily go back to even see who won! The transfer window concept made it really hard to engage with the race. The scoring made no sense to us and I found it difficult to figure out who I even had on my team. Another member of our league spent an hour building her initial team and somehow it didn’t even save. For the first week she had no team, but then a team randomly appeared for her in week 2, with different riders. Given she builds sports analytics apps for a living, I’m quite skeptical this was user error… Two stars because I love escape collective but this really should be 1 or 0. For TdF we will go back to the Tissot app instead :(
In a world where sports betting has taken over, the Escape Collective Fantasy provides that fun challenging alternative that leaves your wallet out of it! This app really does make you feel like part of the race as it challenges you to pick the best rider on the day to compete against friend, foe, and anyone trying to take the jersey off of you! My favorite thing about the app is the variety of competition, with the inclusion of men’s and women’s grande tours. If I could recommend one thing be added, it’d be a message board to the people in your league (with translation available since people are playing from all over). The best thing about this app (other than the bragging rights you gain by besting those in your league) is though free to play, if you win the overall competition you can win real prizes! Whether new to cycling or a seasoned vet, you’ll have fun following the race here! Chapeau!
The content produced by the crew at Escape is top notch bar none. I vote with my wallet and as such I’m an annual member. Money well spent.
