Reviews: What People Think About Chinese Flashcards II

This entire-word flashcard app is an excellent improvement to their original, single-character app, which is still nevertheless useful.
The only two points of improvement I'd suggest would be to include an example sentence, and to use more cautious definitions of some of the words. For example, 内容 is defined as "content," whereas "contents" would be clearer, in distinguishing it from the adjective.
The pronouncing part is good, although I personally never use it, since Pinyin is so straight-forward.

I like the green icon. It looks nice with the red.
This program is perfect because it incorporates EVERY element needed to learn the language: pinyin, audio speech, english translation, and both simplified and traditional characters all displayed at once, without cross-referencing or additional searching. Most other programs leave out at least one of those elements or force you to go back to an index to look up something as you are trying to study.
I suppose writing is another thing to learn, but that's better done separately.
The other important feature is this application teaches actual words, generally two or more characters which are much like compound words in english. Learning roots is also important, but you can't reliably put them together on your own since the literal meaning often won't translate properly.
Also, the practice and quiz formats are just right - there's no annoying structure to learn, so you can jump right into it and pick up again where you left off.
It's perfect. I would like this for other languages, perhaps Cantonese or Korean... a Level III program for mandarin might be nice for studying phrases... give it a blue icon...
(Suggestion: it would be a novel feature to optionally show traditional characters written over the simplified. I don't like choosing just one form to study, and tapping back and forth to change them is tiresome, so seeing both at once would be kind of neat.)

This app. is my fave for 3 reasons.
1) audio. Hearing it spoken in Chinese really improves my diction. I am out of school and back from Asia several years with little chance to hear Chinese.
2). Recording. Being able to record and playback myself right away is fantastic. (toggling between listening and repeating is like having a tutor). I am shocked how western I sound and I really have to try hard to tighten up my pronunciation.
3). The quiz function.
Update-- another reason is being able to toggle between simplified and trad. I studied trad and this makes learning simp. so much easier with that traditional "hint" at the tap of a button.
There are 3 other apps I like (KTdict + CE, Hanzi, and Learn Chinese.).
But I use this the most. while Ktdict has great functionality for building specific word lists (class lessons) it takes a lot of time to build those lists first.
This app is just a quick way to review Chinese characters when you have time. (I have the second set and I study both simplified and trad).
About Chinese Flashcards II
Chinese Flashcards II from ChineseLearnOnline.com continues where our original Chinese Flashcards app left off, by providing you with a list of 1000 common Chinese words and characters to learn from. This is the same list used in level 1 of the HSK test administered worldwide to let people gauge their level of Chinese proficiency. The list used in this program has been sorted into a logical format so that words with similar meanings or from similar topics are arranged together. The list is also structured so that smaller words are taught first, and then put together to form larger words. This makes meanings a lot clearer and makes the whole list much easier to learn.
Usage: Go through the practice mode first to familiarize yourself with the words in the list. Once you are ready, you can start testing yourself in 2 modes.
Character mode: View the word in Chinese characters (simplified or traditional). Decide for yourself how well you know it, then click on Show Answer to reveal the pinyin pronunciation and English meaning. If you guessed correctly, click on Yes and the word will be considered memorized. If you are not sure of it, click on No to have it shown to you again. If you choose not to study this word, click on Skip to have it removed from your learning list.
You can also choose to have the audio for the word played back automatically when the word is revealed. Want to perfect your pronunciation? Then use the recording tool to record yourself and compare it to that of a native Chinese speaker.
Audio mode: Test your listening skills by listening to the audio of the word only. Decide for yourself what the word you hear means, then click on Show Answer to reveal its Chinese characters, meaning and pronunciation.
Features:
- 1000 words from HSK Level 1 list
- Switch between simplified and traditional on the fly
- Choice of 3 modes of study: Character, Audio and Practice
- Auto playback of audio for each word available
- Record and compare your pronunciation with a native Mandarin Chinese speaker
- Choose number of characters in each session
