Portal Guys

The premise of this game is fun and the physics work fine, but there are some major issues that, with a bit of development, could make this a 5-star game. First, the game is a little too generic in a story/design sense. You lead little red blob people to a goal by placing portals to redirect them. This is fine gameplay-wise, but I would really like some characters that make the game feel more engaging. Perhaps instead of watching an infinite number of red guys fall to their deaths while you figure out which portal configuration to use, you could make it that the player has to set up the portals first, and then let their character run through the level, with failure costing some kind of penalty. I would find this a bit more interesting. Also, with no real story or relatable characters, the game feels like it’s really missing something. The somewhat empty, low-concept levels also leave the player feeling a little less interested in the game. Another issue is the level design. The levels are really small and easy to beat, which saves time, but makes the game harder to get into. What if you had more than one pair of portals to use, and the levels were much bigger and complex? What if there was a penalty for failure to really force the player to think out a strategy? I think there are a few ways to make the levels more fun. There is one other problem with the levels too, its that they just don't make a lot of sense. For instance, many of the levels have obstacles and objects in them that you never have to interact with, and they just make the game feel messy and non-linear in a really off-putting way. It can make it harder to understand what the level really is, and it makes it less interesting to play out. Finally, my last criticism is that graphically, the game is awful. Sorry, but the little red guys are unrelateable, and watching them die by the dozen made me feel nothing. Also, the environment are incredibly low in detail and are quite boring to look at. The menus are boring and unthemed. And, of course, the portals are just black circles, you unfortunately can’t see out the other side. Well, that’s all... Good effort I guess!
