When I was 6. By Parker Demers

It all started when I was 6. I remember the day vividly; it was a warm summer afternoon, and the air was thick with the scent of blooming jasmine. My family had just moved to a small town nestled between rolling hills and dense forests. Our new house, a charming old Victorian, stood at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, its wraparound porch inviting and mysterious. One day, while exploring the backyard, I stumbled upon an old, weathered door partially buried under a tangle of vines and fallen leaves. Intrigued, I cleared the debris away, revealing a small wooden door with a rusty iron handle. My curiosity piqued, I pulled the door open, revealing a dark tunnel that seemed to stretch endlessly into the earth. Despite the darkness, something compelled me to crawl inside. The tunnel was cool and damp, and as I inched forward, I noticed faint, glowing symbols etched into the walls. They pulsed with a soft, otherworldly light, guiding me deeper into the unknown. After what felt like hours, I emerged into a vast underground cavern, illuminated by an ethereal glow. In the center of the cavern stood an enormous, ancient tree with branches that seemed to touch the sky. Its roots twisted and turned, forming natural pathways and bridges throughout the cavern. As I wandered through this magical place, I encountered fantastical creatures—tiny fairies with wings that shimmered like diamonds, gentle giants with kind eyes, and mischievous sprites that played tricks on unsuspecting visitors. They welcomed me with open arms, sharing stories of their world and teaching me their ways. Years passed, and I found myself returning to the cavern time and time again. It became my sanctuary, a place where I could escape the trials of the real world and immerse myself in the wonders of the fantastical. The creatures became my friends, my confidants, and my mentors. As I grew older, I realized that the cavern was not just a hidden world beneath the earth but a reflection of my own imagination and dreams. It was a place where anything was possible, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy blurred. Now, as an adult, I look back on those days with a sense of wonder and nostalgia. The experiences I had and the lessons I learned in that magical cavern have shaped who I am today. Though the door to the tunnel is long gone, the memories remain, a reminder of the endless possibilities that lie within the depths of our own imagination.
