Butterfly iQ — Ultrasound

I use the Butterfly each week when seeing patients. It has greatly improved my ability to diagnose and treat patients. The ability to use one probe for cardiac, pulmonary, abdominal, obstetric and vascular studies is extremely helpful. While it doesn’t have the clarity of much more expensive cart based ultrasound systems, I have found that it is sufficient in most situations to confirm or refute a diagnosis. It is portable and readily accessible. I carry it with me whenever I see patients. I also greatly value the ability to save and review studies with other colleagues who are using the Butterfly platform. I have used it to teach many doctors and to learn from many others. I am a pediatric cardiologist who works in a remote setting and I have come to rely on the Butterfly every week.

Imagine having a professional team waiting to help you while you are making a good use of world's first hand-held, single-probe whole-body ultrasound system, conveniently in your palm with your phone? I am from Myanmar where specialist doctors are so scarce and hospitals are so far from majority or barely functional. I received POCUS training while working at MSF in a hilly remote area, which purpose was to train rural doctors with basic POCUS skills to help mountain people who rarely use currency. The short training was backed by telemedicine and it made a great change for five doctors and their patients. Owning an ultrasound machine was merely a dream for poor doctors here... before Butterfly iq was born. This is actually not supposed to be using here in Myanmar but I believed it would help my clinical life and I ordered one with the help of a friend from US. Difficultly shipped to here and I downloaded the app using VPN app. Now I connect the black blue beauty with my new iPad mini5 and instantly, I am in love. Thank you, Butterfly Team! I am an Internal Medicine physician in his 18th year of longitudinal primary care career. I do not write reviews. The concept of a universal device bestowing immediate ultrasound vision at point of care, at a price point equivalencies of 2000 down and 1.33 cents per day, I started believing in both the mind and the heart of humanity once again. The people who designed and had the most altruistic pricing structure in the history of medical devices have earned my sincere gratitude, all my prayers and heartfelt thanks for saving Billions of lives with early and appropriate diagnoses now and forever henceforth. Yes, for non radiologists, non interventionists there is a steep learning curve. Currently I’m diagnosing and treating so many conditions based on synthesis of history and physical exam. Labs and radiology always came later. Now, with the help and benevolence of local radiology colleagues who are giving feedback, known ultrasound technicians who are giving one to one after hour classes, my skill sets are increasing daily but no where near where it can replace a formal study for now. When I am finding a visible gallbladder without stones and inflammation, it other things are not alarming, I’m waiting for the lab and formal ultrasound in a day or so without the need to send the patient to ER. At least in the countries where this price is not a challenge, within few decades, every medical assessment will include a butterfly section as in inspection, palpaption, auscultation, percussion and “butterflication”. Once again, may the blessings of helping so much of humanity all at once and at such a scale, may the creators and their families be rewarded with all the happiness and good karma that comes with doing good.
