Update: the developer fixed my issues, so glad to have functionality back again in the new app. :) I Just changed to a newer iPhone, and no longer have access to my favorite app, “Power One Financial Calculator”. Sadly, this same developer made a worse and more cumbersome version of it. I used to be able to calculate my 401k, and see the depreciation of an investment account, (without internet access!) but now I would have to pay eternally recurring payments to have access to all of that. And I have to search and add every template to get the list of templates I had before, and those I do get have parts of them removed, so I can’t reverse my calculations. The free versions of my most used templates are hamstrung. I’ll now need to use formulas in numbers until I can find a better and faster iOS financial calculator to replace what is now “Advanced” Savjngs and 401(K) I wish there was a better way to support developers of relatively simple apps like this.
Subscription services are lucrative for developers, I guess. But, for the user I have to decide which apps to subscribe to (if any) and which ones I have to quit using because I can’t afford a subscription for every app I use. I don’t mind buying an app at all, but having to pay an annual fee is just beyond my means. And so, I will switch my "calculator" app to something else other than PowerOne because they, at some point, will go to the next version (x.x or y.x or whatever) and I will be left in the dust having to subscribe to keep up with the technology. If every developer ends up with subscription requirements I will just have to abandon my support for them all. How many $50, $20, $75, $20, $40, $20, $25 services can you afford? For me it’s not many and so I just stop using an app that thinks their product should charge me a monthly or annual fee to use it!! There are plenty of alternatives out there. The smart developer will appreciate their customer’s PURCHASE of an app and take into consideration that users will have to decide which apps to keep or which apps to abandon. The less used apps I have will be the first to go. And, PowerOne falls into that category as there are many alternatives that don’t require a subscription fee after purchase. I’ve paid enough for the prior versions of this app, remove ads. etc. I’m done.
I’ve been using PowerOne for many years now. I was in need of a good RPN calculator and liked their version 4 design. So I took a good look at the rest of the app and discovered the templates. What a discovery it turned out to be too. I’ve spent a lot of time and money on programmable calculators over the years and never found any that worked out. Until now, PowerOne is the definition of programmable, customizable what ever you want to call it. It’s just a lot fun to play around with and when you are done playing you have a powerful tool with you. It is too bad PowerOne is stuck in the calculator section of the App Store. It’s so much more than just a calculator. Although it does have a great calculator. However that’s just a small part of what PowerOne really is. In Version 6 they brought back Version 4’s interface which was very easy to use and Version 6 is a lot easier to program than Version 4 was, so now we have the best of both versions. I never had a problem with the login. Because I know what I’m getting in return. Things only a login can provide, syncing across all my devices, and a web based editor. Plus there are things coming in future versions I don’t even know about yet. Pricing, I don’t understand how you can make money at a 1 time 5 dollar fee. It turns out you can’t. So if we want to keep using PowerOne the developer needs to get paid. The complainers have no idea of what they have. I do, and I’m willing to pay for it.
