The Race - F1 and much more

The app offers an ad supported experience which does not require a subscription as well as an ad-free experience for subscribers known as the members club. Despite being a paid member, I am not able to use the ad-free option because the log in leads back to the original screen where you have to select ad supported vs ad free options. This has been a problem for several months now and has not been rectified. In my last email with user support, I was directed to log into the website instead of using the app to read articles.

This is the first time I’ve felt compelled to review an app. I’ve been reading The Race weekly to daily for three years, primarily using the app since it came out. I love The Race, and I think their content is fantastic. That said, the new advertising system they’ve added in the last week or so makes the app absolutely infuriating to use. You cannot go 30 seconds reading an article before being redirected to a full page advertisement. You also lose your place in the article when this happens. I don’t mind ads for a free product, but there’s a way to incorporate advertisements that doesn’t completely ruin the user experience. It’s just poor UX design. From now on, I’m just going to read The Race on browser. It’s a bummer, the app was great and very convenient before it was ruined by poorly implemented ads.

I’ve been reading The-Race on the web for years (don’t forget the hyphen) and love writing and the podcasts—especially the F1 and Bring Back V10s—but also the Indy and formula E coverage. It started out good but has elevated its game bit by bit and, to me, outdoes more established outlets in breaking stories and analysis. Having that in a more phone friendly app was long overdue.
