Wishful Cook - Don’t be disappointed! Try this as per Craig, the app developer, who couldn’t have been nicer when I wrote to him about this: “So this app can do several things - one thing it can do is simply to provide subtitles for what people are saying around you in the language they are speaking - and that can be in English. If that's all you want - you can go to the settings (look for the cog icon in the bottom left corner) and turn off the translateswitch.” The app will do what you want, at least at close range. I am looking forward to trying it - so far I have only had the chance to try it with my own voice like a dictation service, but that worked pretty well on my first try a few minutes ago! I don’t really have enough to go on yet to rate this app a 5, but will do so for now just given the possibility of the help it offers.

This seems like a useful app for translating spoken languages into a different language. I was hoping to use it to be able to caption what people are saying around me since I’m Deaf and it would be awesome to be able to read in English what people say to me in English. But I guess I’m going to have to ask people to speak in other languages in order to be able to understand them in English with this app, because it refuses to subtitle spoken English in written English. Even though it does so for any other language - so why not add English as well?

It recognizes my voice quite accurately, translations are good quality. Note that Settings button is hard to spot!
