Strongbox Pro

After a commercial auth program decided to break and sync garbage, causing me to lose all my two factor auth keys (thankfully, I had an offline device that I was able to re-key everything), I decided to use something that was open, and where I could back up the contents easily, while having cloud access. Strongbox is perfect. It is extremely well designed. I use it with a keyfile on all devices, so the KeePass database isn’t able to be brute forced, even if the cloud provider is compromised. I REALLY wish for one feature — the ability to save a database as another file, with different DB encryption credentials. This will greatly help with backups. This way, if I’m using a Yubikey for the main database, I can save backups onto secure, offline media (encrypted USB flash drive), and a simple password. This way, losing my Yubikey won’t mean the loss of the PW file.

Been using Strongbox Pro for about a year now. Main reason I chose it is because it allows self hosting the password database on your own hardware. With Strongbox you can, of course, host your passwords in the cloud if you like. After Lastpass was hacked I moved to Strongbox. Never again will I store passwords in the cloud. The import feature works well and made the transition fairly easy from Lastpass. I self host on a Raspberry Pi on my home network. Strongbox syncs the database between all of my devices including my wife’s devices. It allows offline access to your passwords when you’re on the road. It syncs changes and resolves conflicts you or your wife might make in offline mode when you get back on your home network. The developer is responsive. I asked a lot of questions on Reddit before making the switch. He answered all of my questions quickly and clearly. I learned a lot from his responses. Strongbox has worked flawlessly. I highly recommended it.

I was a longtime user of 1Password, and really depended on its functionality. I was not happy, though, when they decided to prevent the use of local vaults and then moved onto a non-native client for Mac. Since I was a heavy 1Password user, storing attachments and using custom fields, I thought the move to a different password manager was going to be difficult. I was wrong, the transition to Strongbox was incredibly easy. The UI is excellent, and the migration from 1Password to Strongbox was seamless. I waited to write this review until I had some time to use Strongbox. Its been several months now, and I am extremely happy I made the decision to switch to Strongbox. The only feature that is really missing, is plugins for other browsers. That is not an issue for me since the app is so easy to use, has a great UI, and offers password autofill using the native api, like the built in Mac password manager uses. I have tested the complex Strongbox password databases I have on Windows, with KeePassXC, and it works perfectly. I am thrilled that Strongbox offers such a great experience, using an open source cross-platform database format, and allowing me to keep my data under my control - but still very accessible.
