Snap & Translate - Translator

I travel all over the world… I am constantly looking for a translator app that fits best to countries and situations I’m in. Not every app does - not a big deal - I don’t expect that. I work with what is best for the situation I am in. I also alway test the app out before travel so there will be no surprises and delays when I am in country. I downloaded the free trial and within 10 minutes I am now deleting it and canceling my trial. I tried various languages from Hebrew to English, Russian to English, Spanish to English, French to Hebrew, etc. it did not pick up any text. Not. One. Text. I attempted it in various lighting situations and with both flat surfaces and curved (such as a bottle) - no text was found in any of my trials. This is the first time with the various apps I’ve tried regarding translation that has been such a failure right out of the box… As I said, it’s disappointing because the idea is amazing… But, I cannot recommend this app.

Firstly, this app is pretty cool and exciting. It’s amazing that someone created such a useful app, and that such technology is becoming available to us. The critical part of this review is this- I tested this app out and found the object recognition to be pretty reliable. The text recognition was less reliable as it couldn’t always read my writing even though I printed it out clearly. Sometimes it was difficult getting the app to read text that surely seemed to be “in the window” but the app “didn’t seem to think so”. Anyway, overall, I think the app is pretty cool and can see it being useful in a pinch, even with these issues.

I downloaded it because I needed Urdu translation. Why? I have a special need daughter who understands Urdu better. I need Urdu added so she can communicate better. And others can speak in english or Spanish and she could translate it in Urdu if she needs help. Please add Urdu. شکریہ
