Record Scanner - Vinyl & CD

I found the app after thinking to myself, boy it would be slick to have an app that finds record data by taking a picture of it. I tired the free version and was impressed enough to buy a membership. I inherited a collection of over 400 albums, mostly jazz from the 50’s and was able to scan them into my phone over the course of about 8 hours. Some loaded quickly from the image, but some required me to key in the information (the more obscure recordings). I eventually found all the records, even the 78’s and added them to my collection. I also exported the collection into an Excel file. The Excel table will show all the tracks (basically all the Discogs data), so if I want to hear Muskrat Ramble I can search the excel file and find every record featuring that tune. The only complaint I have with the Excel data is that all the numbers are stored as text. The first thing I did was try to sort the records by value … you can’t do that with numbers stored as text – but I knew how to fix that. I now have another 200 or so rock records to add. I can’t argue with the price – for the time it saves its cheap. 5 stars.

First and foremost, I love this app, I have no problem paying for it. I’ve been able to catalog my 750-ish and growing albums. I love that I can create my own storage units, especially since I’ve got them in 3 different rooms in my house. The search function is pretty good, but it sometimes doesn’t find identifiers that I’m looking for, then when I go ahead and manually scan and try to find that version, it’s listed right there in the “Identifiers” section, but didn’t come up in the search. This doesn’t happen happen that often, but it’s annoying when there’s 200 versions of an album and it’s easier to just do the search instead of scan. Also, I don’t think my collection is close to being worth over $20k, but that brings me to my other issue. I wish that there was an option to add grading with estimated value for the grade. The picture on the website even shows a range of values, but the actual app does not. Adding this would be an awesome feature that would make this app complete.

I’ve been using Record Scanner for about 6-7 years now. I have to say that I’ve used related products but have never seen the same value I get when I use Record Scanner. It’s orders of magnitude more friendly than Discogs. I use it all the time and am currently happily on a yearly sub since it really helps me with my collecting. The support is always down to earth and friendly…kind of like you’re just talking to a good friend about your hobby which I really appreciate! I rarely promote apps I use because they generally don’t actually “help” me significantly in my everyday hobbies or stuff I do — with this exception. I always appreciate how well the app works and the friendly support and dedication the team has to making a good app for this area which is very quickly becoming more and more popular again!
