This game is a nightmare for people who don't want to wait forever in order to play a puzzle. For starters, you can only receive up to 20 tokens a day. The puzzles themselves take up 10 tokens at minimum, which only allows you to play 2 puzzles. The game lets you wait for tokens, but only gives you up to 5 before it stops giving you more. After all your tokens are done, you can't do anything! In order to get more, you either have to watch ads, complete surveys, or pay for them. Not to mention the ads-- they get annoying quick! After every puzzle, you get stuck with an ad, which is annoying as is. Sometimes you can play puzzles for free as long as you watch an ad, which is nice, but being stuck with the ad from completing the puzzle and the ad before the next puzzle can be quite the nuisance. The worst part is, the game is actually pretty fun. It's got puzzles that you know and love, and even some that you've never heard of! It's pretty fun and very addicting, but it's a shame there's no way to actually play them without giving them money or waiting for a long time. Quite honestly? It's completely stupid that you need tokens in order to play anyways. What are you, an arcade machine? It's puzzles for crying out loud! It's supposed to calm you and challenge your brain, not challenge your wallet! Anyway, with that said in done, this game has a lot to offer and can be pretty fun; unless you're willing to spend a lot of time and money into this game, it's not worth it.
After using this app for several months, I decided to buy the subscription to avoid having to watch ads to earn tokens. On the plus side, there are lots of puzzles to choose from. Unfortunately though you don’t get unlimited access to your favorite puzzles in the special issues. For these puzzles you have to use “keys”, and you only get 5-10 keys per day. You can use earned tokens to pay for more puzzles, but you receive fewer tokens the more puzzles you play. For example, for some puzzles I now only earn tokens after I complete 100 of them. If you run out of tokens and want to continue with your favorites, you have to go back to watching ads or paying for tokens. Some of my favorite puzzles are only posted once per week on the daily pages, so this is very disappointing and also very upsetting since I paid for the subscription. On the plus side, I can go back to previous issues to play my favorites, so I am doing that now. I expect though that I will work my way through those pretty quickly. After that, I see no reason to continue with the subscription. I understand that developers are trying to make money, but when you try to squeeze more money out of customers who have already paid for the service, your customers are going to resent that and not come back. I feel cheated, and I will be one of the customers moving on to other apps when my yearly subscription ends.
I enjoy this game so much. If you like word games and puzzle books from Penny Press and Dell, you will love this app. For a monthly subscription of $6 or yearly $35, it is a massive bargain compared to he price of the magazine puzzle books of $3 to $8. Plus you can complete the puzzles multiple times if you subscribe. I know for some puzzles that isn’t fun after completing but for others, it is. Plus you get all the previous month’s puzzles in the price of the subscription. They give you free tokens and coins when you meet a milestone (completing so many puzzles of the same type). You get 5 free “keys” a day which allow you to play 5 non calendar games without paying any tokens. After that, it is 10 tokens to play those games. They do offer for purchase tokens and coins, but frankly the rewards of these are plentiful that I have not had to purchase any. I also believe you receive some daily, if you subscribe (not 100% sure). One of the best parts for me is that after the initial purchase and aside from updates, I have not needed internet access. This is great when I am somewhere that has no internet service or my data package on my iPad does not work. It is a daily new app, I think not even a year old, and they are adding games to it. The only tiny problem I have had is sometimes the terms are odd for me. The reason is I am an American and the game is made in Great Britain, so sometimes the terms are different here, but it has only happened a couple times that I was not able to figure out the answer. So if you like puzzle books and games, this app is for you.
