In order to use the app, you have to update the firmware on your OneWheel Pint. Since the Pint has a crap battery life, I NEED it to monitor my battery, so the Push Back doesn’t THROW ME FROM THE BOARD! This was a huge error & I regret it so much. I hate the haptic buzz with every fiber of my being. I originally thought it was mainly for speed & didn’t think anything of it because I don’t go fast on my pint. My max speed is 11 mph (if that sometimes) compared to the top speed of 16 mph. I primarily ride on grass & dirt in fear of pavement. I like going on bike trails. Grass & dirt have small holes & isn’t perfect like pavement. Every time I go over a tree root, a rock, or go through a small hole. It Immediately triggers the haptic buzz. It feels like I can’t even ride my board without feeling BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ anymore. It’s constant!!! So now I have to learn to ride on pavement or “learn to get over it.” My OneWheel wasn’t cheap & I’m extremely disappointed. I cried because I thought I finally learned how to ride the board & then with the update, I feel like I need a whole new riding style. For extra context. I’m a 27 year old adult & I strongly value safety. I went the whole nine yards & got a Fox Racing helmet, knee pads, jacket, wrist guards, etc. Haptic Buzz isn’t safe; it’s dangerous. If you’re on dirt cruising at a safe speed & hit a rock, it triggers the board & can distract riders, which can throw off their balance. And you DON’T even get custom shaping either!!
I love my Onewheel and am so stoked that it exists. However there a few holes with the app as it exists today. The app is pretty bare bones. It does the basics pretty well but i feel it could benefit from both improved reliability and more focus on safety. Sometimes the app tells me I need to update it to connect to the board (but I’m using the latest version of the app). Restating the app usually fixes this. The current speed on the app seems to update in near-realtime which I appreciate, however the current speed being passed on to the Apple Watch seems to be laggy. Improving this would be huge, as the watch is the ideal way to monitor speed. A native Apple Watch app would be cool. Also, I’m not sure if I’ve experienced pushback or not, but I have been thrown off the front of the board at high speeds a couple of times. A stern alert to watch or phone that pushback has occurred and shutdown is imminent would be HUGE so that the rider could hopefully rectify the situation in time. That’s really the biggest hole for me and I think that really needs some attention. Love the product overall and I try to monitor my speed as best I can to avoid getting thrown but the onewheel just lends itself to cruising so nicely. Some features to assist the rider there would be awesome.
I love my OW and have over 300 miles on it. I ride with my family a lot, on the beach, in town, and around my college campus. Although I haven’t sustained any real injuries from riding because I always keep my speed under like 16 mph and wear all my protective gear, there are lots of daredevils out there who like to push the 20 mph limit (like my stepdad and other reviewers here) or folks who are just unaware of how fast they are going and end up nosediving often without a detectable enough warning. It might be nice to have an option where your phone gets alerted once you’ve breached like the 17 mph mark for example because at that speed you’re pretty close to pushing it too far, falling or being booted off, and possibly sustaining pretty bad injuries. I think that a loud audible alarm or notification of some sort would be helpful for those types of incidents if such a feature hasn’t been implemented already. Another thing, is it possible to make a widget for your Lock Screen to show important information during your ride, such as current speed, so that you don’t have to unlock your phone while riding? If it’s possible I think that would help out a lot! It could be something you enable or disable maybe. Other than that, please keep up the great work and ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET AND PROTECTIVE GEAR SUCH AS ELBOW WRIST AND KNEE PADS! Xoxo
