If you are familiar with the New Testament and are able to interpret some Latin, this may be a great way for you to encourage retention of the Latin language. I use the Latin Vulgate Bible in order to increase my ability to understand Latin vocabulary. Using my understanding of the verses in English, I am usually able to figure out the words I do not know and see how they are being used. It is also helpful to read the Bible in a different language because there are different words for “love “ and for “you” ; and there are other words that could change the meaning that you are getting from reading only in English.
The new update to this app turned a good resource into a great one! Interface is very easy and streamlined, and the text is very accurate (based on my comparisons to a printed Vulgate and to the Gutenberg Bible). I use this app to keep my Latin sharp during spare moments and to compare an older translation to my modern ones. Used in conjunction with a good Latin dictionary, you can get a lot of meaning out of the particular word choices in this version and their ancient/medieval contexts. My only problem is that it hasn’t been functioning too well lately. The options for disabling ads don’t work, my app crashes whenever I scroll past 2 Timothy in the menu (effectively cutting me off from accessing the last several books), and when the verse of the day does appear (which seems to be random) it is sometimes just a black screen. If these are fixed I will change my review to 5 stars, because this is otherwise an excellent app.
This app is very well designed. The typeface is clear and the navigation is simple. I haven't even begun to plumb the depths of this app, as there are many features that I have not used. But of those that I have used, I can say that they work very well. Definitely recommended if you are interested in the Latin version of the Good Book.
