I don’t usually write reviews for apps but Kiprun deserves it. I was looking for an alternative to Runna because I didn’t want to pay. I found this free app and it really is amazing. It personalizes your pace and plan for you and really helps new runners figure out how fast they should be running and learn more about running, and most importantly and overlooked, recovery. I couldn’t recommend an app more.
UPDATE: They fixed my only complaint - runs not being analyzed properly. For me, this is the best free running app! The closest competition, Nike Run Club, doesn’t have as good of an Apple Watch integration. And while their plans can lean on the heavy side, you’re able to adjust the intensity of your plans up or down accordingly. So far, the app does an excellent job of generating workouts and sending them to the Apple Watch. In fact, this is my favorite implementation of smart watch workout guidance of any app except maybe Runna. By using the built in Apple workouts API, it takes advantage of all the things Apple is good at. It’s clean, reliable, and easy to use. Unlike apps like Nike Run Club. However, my experience turns there. While the total time, distance, and some HR data make it to the app, the splits do not. Which, essentially makes the analysis feature useless because it averages in my warm up and cool downs. I hope that once this is fixed, it’ll be a 5-star experience! I can’t wait to see the app improve.
I installed this app after trying the Decat Coach app. The experience is much improved in Kiprun Pacer with the full compatibility with Apple Watch to upload the training runs to the watch (no need to carry the phone at all) and then download the run data back into the Fitness app. The integration with the Fitness app had some issue before to recognize the runs completion in Kiprun Pacer (intervals training in particular) which I reported a few times, and now the developers have fixed it! Great app support and wonderful user experience on Apple Watch and iPhone with the latest update so far!
