Reviews: What People Think About RBdigital

My library recently upgraded/expanded their digital magazine offerings and I was forced to switch from the Zinio app, which although not perfect, is in fact more user friendly, to RBDIGITAL. It now appears that I have over 700 magazines checked out and there’s no apparent way to clean these up in a simple way. I’d have to one by one return them by selecting them for return and then acknowledging the return. This is painful. At least within the Zinio app there is a Select All button and you can mass archive. I also prefer that Zinio makes use of the full screen to display magazines. Why is RBDIGITAL only using a single horizontal line of magazines at the top of the screen, which only displays five magazines at a time with a horizontal scroll to display my Checked Out magazines. Why not three lines of five and scroll vertically. (Zinio displays three rows of four issues and scrolls vertically). Zinio isn’t perfect and I personally believe that in “improving” their app they’ve made it worse over the years, but they’re still doing magazines better. I will remain hopeful of being able to return to using it or that RBDIGITAL will incorporate some of its better features. On a positive note, I thought the magazine reading experience was comparable between the two.

I don’t know how this app has ever rec’d a 4.6 rating when myself & most of the reviewers find it totally useless. I think they must be stacking the deck when I read the positive reviews. Someone gave it a 5 star because they are looking forward to using it?!?! When my library first introduced the app as a way to borrow magazines, I was thrilled. And for the first year it worked well. Magazines downloaded in a reasonable time & without difficulty on to my iPad mini. Then the developers started adding updates. Big, big mistake! Ever since the first update, this app has been nothing but balky. I can check out a magazine but downloading to read offline is a nightmare. The downloads constantly hang up. Sometimes it takes me days to get one magazine downloaded. It will start & then switch to pending & stay there. I have been in touch with my library who referred me to the developer. A couple of emails between myself & the developer did not solve the problem. Their final response was “We are having problems with some magazine titles ( I find it with every title) & are working to solve the problem.” That was a year ago. Updating the app makes no changes at all to the magazine screen. Considering the problems with the magazines, I haven’t even attempted to borrow a book. As wonderful as this app could have been, libraries are wasting their money on it. Developers please hire someone who knows how to fix this!

Maybe I just don’t understand how to work this app but I was very e cited to be able to “check” books out from my library without having to drive to the library. However, the book options I’ve seen so far are very limited. I searched by title and author and each one I’ve tried looking for says it’s not recognized (popular authors too like Rick Riordan). I was limited to the few random books that were listed under the unrecognized titles and authors. I downloaded/checked one out from the small list of about five or six. Now I’m reading it. Every time I finished a chapter the app goes into think mode to download the next chapter. I usually have to completely close it out and open it back up so the new chapter will download. If I don’t close it down quick enough, it skips about twenty “pages” ahead and now I have to s roll back to the end of the previous chapter to find my page. Very frustrating. I would’ve given it one star but the book is decent and keeps me entertained while I’m actually able to read it. I hope these glitches get fixed quickly.
